Why study sustainable development? Sustainable development is an integrated concept of development that addresses global environmental, social and economic challenges. Studying sustainable development can help solve global problems such as climate change, resource scarcity, social inequality, and uneven economic development. As a first-class university in China, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has the responsibility and mission to carry out cutting-edge research and exploration to advance the fields of science, technology, and engineering. Research sustainability is in line with the school's academic research mission and contributes to the school's academic reputation and influence. Through the study of sustainable development, Shanghai Jiao Tong University can provide students with a broader academic perspective and practical opportunities, and cultivate talents with a global perspective and sustainability thinking. These talents will contribute to the sustainable development of the country and the world. The results of sustainable development can provide valuable reference and suggestions for governments and policymakers, and promote the formulation and implementation of national and regional sustainable development policies. As a well-known university in China, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has a strong sense of social responsibility. I studied Engineering and International Affairs in undergrad and always said that Int'l Affairs was the harder of the two. Why? Engineers would have problem sets with relatively concrete solutions. Int'l Affairs classes were about the ideologies behind the world we live in. It wasn't a set of solutions, but frameworks for thinking about the world. Yet, they were also solving problems that were just more open ended and without a singular solution. It was about finding a minimum consensus of what to believe in. Solutions to the climate crisis are similar. The science is important. But if the science were enough, we wouldn't be in our current situation. Instead, we need the skills taught by the humanities. I've been saying this! In the world of higher education, there's a hidden treasure trove of potential waiting to be unlocked – our college students. 🎓💡 I had a theory in 2020: Could the energy, creativity, and diversity of our university campuses be harnessed to address pressing global challenges? The answer, as it turns out, was a resounding YES! Launching a task force in a small town plagued by water scarcity, I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of student-led initiatives. Assembling a dream team of students from various majors, backgrounds, and passions, we embarked on a mission that went beyond textbooks. It wasn't easy. Challenges were aplenty, but our determination was unwavering. We split the work, leveraged our networks, and combined our unique skill sets to drive change that was bigger than us. And the results spoke volumes. What was most surprising and gratifying was the recognition from leaders from various business industries and governmental departments, lawyers, and scientific experts who marveled at our knowledge and the speed of our deliveries. It was a testament to what motivated and resourceful college students can achieve when they put their minds and hearts into it. This was my favorite thing Socially Immersed LLC has done to date. I was always bored in college because I felt we weren't doing anything useful. I'm glad to know my theory worked and now, I can't wait to replicate this success on university campuses everywhere. To all the university decision-makers out there, consider this: Your students are an untapped force for good. I have never expected to describe a completed online course, Columbia University's "The Age of Sustainable Development" course, led by Professor Jeffrey Sachs, PhD, demonstrates that it's possible to provide a concise overview of a complex and essential topic like Sustainable Development without cutting out important content. There is also a book of this course with the very same title "The Age of Sustainable Development": "Jeffrey D. Sachs is one of the world's most perceptive and original analysts of global development.
