Still buzzing from introducing the DE&I Debate panel at Bloomfest yesterday!! 🤩 Firstly, thanks to Bloom UK, Naren Patel, Annika Allen (She/Her), Brooke Millhouse and Georgie Moreton for an honest conversation around conflicting views about the pace of DE&I commitments and actions over the past few years. A couple takeaways for me are: 1. The Black Lives Matter movement saw companies massively increase investment for DE&I initiatives, however the economic downturn has since led to some companies backtracking on their commitments and progress 2. Despite the downturn, many companies with strong DE&I foundations prior to 2020 have weathered previous marketplace downturns and understand that DE&I is a key component to innovation, marketplace edge and commercial success 3. DE&I is here to stay. Numerous research conducted by WFA, The Media Leader and Ernest and Young indicates DE&I being an important factor for many in choosing and staying within current companies 4. Community is key. We all will have experienced the power of people coming together from different backgrounds, having different experiences and creating different connections – based on a shared goal and vision to make things happen for the better. This topic is no different.

How important is authenticity to consumers?   This week, we have highlighted five key principles from our ‘Money is on Everyone’s Mind’ bulletin looking at what brands and businesses can do to be part of the solution addressing anxiety amidst rising costs:   1️⃣ Build a strategy around what unites, not what divides us. 2️⃣ Show empathy for a range of circumstances. 3️⃣ It all comes back to basic human needs. 4️⃣ Good business is good for business.   And finally, brands and businesses should: 5️⃣ Mind the authenticity gap. 🚧   People have grown sceptical of purpose driven communications, so businesses and brands need to find a way to demonstrate that their actions truly align with their words. My thoughts on #DEI backlash in the news. There's just no economic future in it. This is your evolving customer base and no matter what you say or do or think, your TAM is becoming more diverse. Period. And they are going to make purchasing choices based on more than just your product or service. If you choose to listen to edge-case voices that bemoan diversity, inclusion, or equity as "a bad thing" you are simply not long for the new marketplace. I'm not going to try and tell you to "do good" because if you cared about that, you'd already be doing it. Here's my economic argument - if you want to sell to a diverse customer base, your org better be diverse. Period. There's either moving forward or dying. Your choice.
