TECH JOURNEY :: DAY 23 Franklin Clarence Mars: The Sweet Journey of a Tenacious Entrepreneur! Once upon a time in a quaint little town, there lived a man named Franklin Clarence Mars. He wasn't the fanciest fellow around, with no university degrees or heaps of cash. But oh, did he have a dream! Franklin's dream was to create the most delicious candies the world had ever tasted. Now, Franklin's journey wasn't a smooth ride. Nope, it was a rollercoaster of ups and downs. He faced bankruptcy, a failed marriage, and had virtually no prospects. But you know what? He had something far more powerful than money or degrees—he had determination. Born in Hancock, Minnesota, Franklin's love for candy-making began in his mother's kitchen. Even as a young lad, he wasn't content with ordinary recipes. He experimented, added twists, and dreamed big. After trying his hand at various businesses and facing failures, Franklin landed in Tacoma, Washington. There, in his kitchen, he started the Mars Candy Factory. His first creations faced hurdles, but he didn't give up. And then, the breakthrough came—the Milky Way bar was born! The Milky Way became a sensation, paving the way for Franklin's candy empire. With each success, he faced new challenges, but his spirit remained unbroken. His partnership with his son Forrest led to iconic candies like Snickers and Mars Bar, making their mark in the chocolate world. Franklin's journey teaches us that setbacks are just stepping stones to success. As he once said, "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts." And I promise you, something great will come of it." - Benjamin Mee from "We Bought a Zoo" This quote, one of my favorites of all time, came to mind when I read Spencer McKeown's post last week about his 29-day countdown to needing to make something happen in his new business venture. He's on a clock, and when time is up, his family faces big changes - like moving back to England size changes. The accompanying picture to Spencer's post, his family picture with his six children, is what hit home for me. It hit home because I relate. I, too, have six kids I'm trying not to let down, and the clock is ticking. I feel like every month is a new 30-day countdown flipping by the second in my head. And the stakes if I can't make things happen are too big for failure. The cool part is that we can thrive in these pressure cooker situations. While the time may be uncomfortable, so uncomfortable that it literally feels like everything is about to blow up, the bravery to face what seems impossible is also when the most growth and change happens. We all know this. Whether it's twenty seconds like the quote, a month, or even a year, facing whatever it is that seems impossible, even when sometimes there's no other choice, can create the most fascinating, unexpected outcomes. I'm rooting for Spencer and his family this month.
