Micoteca da Universidade do Minho - MUM, has received its new Smartfreezer® EVO, which is a robotic solution to automate the storage and retrieval of vials, containing biological material, stored at cryogenic temperature (-180°C). Loading and unloading is done by individual vial, avoiding exposure to unnecessary thermal stress to the tubes stored within the device. The operator does not need to come into contact with any cold surface or liquid nitrogen while using the machine, in fact the only activity the user has to do is to select the required sample via the software interface. This new equipment complements our cryogenic facility for microbial long-term preservation under the quality 4.0 approach that MUM pursues. This investment was supported by MIRRI-PT Polo Norte (PINFRA04/84445/2020) project, which intends, among other activities, to implement an International Deposit Authority (IDA) for microbes involved in patents under the Budapest Treaty at the Northern hub of the MIRRI - Microbial Resource Research Infrastructure Portuguese Node. 📊 **Particle Size:**  Particle size is a crucial physical property in various industries, influencing material characteristics like reactivity, stability, texture, and more. A typical example is powder coatings where the quality and the optical properties of the coating depend on the particle size distribution of the powder. In addition to a well-defined top size, the amount of fines is of fundamental importance as this affects the applicability of the powder. => Why is particle size controlled in powder coating? A technique called laser diffraction is used for this purpose. In this process, the paint sample is illuminated with a laser beam that undergoes diffraction depending on the size of the particles it encounters. By measuring this diffraction throughout the test, the ratio of particles of each size can be determined. Thanks to the measurement, the milling and processing parameters are adjusted so that the paint particles are of a suitable size. Since the mill is equipped with a particle sizing system, the particle size produced during grinding and packaging is modified.
