In a world where social media often exacerbates comparisons, this message couldn't be more pertinent. We are a month on from the Campaign UK Breakfast Briefing ‘The Year Ahead’ where speakers including Leo Burnett's Chaka Sobhani and Saatchi & Saatchi’s Richard Huntington, discussed what lies ahead for adland in 2024. Besides the continued and healthy conversations around inclusion, hybrid working and AI, here are the three thoughts that have stayed with me… 1. Times have changed:  Our nights out will begin and end earlier. The hardest reservation to get in a restaurant now is the first sitting, the National Theatre are trialing earlier show times and Annie Mac is hosting raves that get you home before bedtime. Let’s check our audiences are still where we think they are. 2. We are responsible for setting the tone:  I’ve always subscribed to the theory of the self-fulfilling prophecy so was pleased to hear the panel acknowledge how powerful this can be as a collective. Optimism and hope starts with us. There’s enough doom and gloom out there. Let’s not add to it with more negativity. Sew the seed of positivity and possibility and watch it flourish. 3. Find the fun:  Dan Morris from The Or said it’s our job to “sprinkle some sugar on the medicine“. In challenging times we need a spark of joy. This certainly explains the wave of briefs we have received that are steeped in comedy or nostalgic nods of happier times. POV: it's March 2022 and you're looking for your next career move. Me: How big is the strategy team currently? Guo-You Chew: We don't have one. You would be Tommy Singapore's first ever strat hire. Me: cool. coolcoolcoolcoolcoolcoolcoolcoolcool. Every strategist goes through some form of imposter syndrome. Me especially so when I took the leap of faith to help start Tommy's strategy team from scratch in Singapore. And since then, it's been an absolutely wild 1.5 years growing Tommy's strategic offering together with Bernice Dela Cruz, my partner-in-crime. Ngl we struggled in the beginning, and a lot of times I had no clue what I was doing. But I learnt shamelessly on-the-go and trialled with error. Most importantly, I had the trust of a team that didn't freak out every time I said, "I don't know if this will work, but I really think we should try". Tq and sorry to Esther SCY who has bore the brunt of my excited/uncertain work energy. And through 1.5 years of "not knowing if this will work but really thinking we should try", together we've achieved some pretty amazing things: - did a ton of cool shit - highlights include launching Prime Video in the biggest SEA markets, and dropping some influencers 600 feet high for YouTube - won a bunch of pitches from exciting brands like Garena and Google, against some stiff competition from industry giants - brought in the agency's very first Spikes Asia award - elevated the creative team's strategic thinking with Mark Lawrence Ong, a rare breed of creative director that wants strategy involved throughout the creative process All these things wouldn't have been possible without a culture that welcomes failure and learning from it, a team that takes the work seriously but not themselves seriously, and a pantry that keeps my spirits up even in the lowest of days (shoutout to our never-ending supply of Cheezels). I rarely post here but I think credit has to be given where it's due. All love to Tommy.

After spending last week at The Social Hub's Better Society Academy for DE&I, I'm back at work and reading posts about the Cannes Advertising Festival. This got me thinking about DE&I in the advertising industry. Throughout much of my media career, I felt the need to hold back parts of my identity to 'fit in' with a 'red-blooded' boss, a homophobic client, or by once feigning resilience when called a 'f****t' across the office for taking a last-minute client meeting in a room I hadn't booked. It would be easy to point out the inherent inequities at Cannes, like the exorbitant cost of festival tickets or the price of a bottle of rosé at the Gutter Bar. However, there seems to be progress being made through initiatives from the organizers and festival participants. It’s always fun to work for a brand that’s as daring as you are. At FIVE Holdings, I oversee Public Relations for a mixture of initiatives. You have the traditional, the expected, the non-negotiables of hospitality. But then you have the daring initiatives that only FIVE could pull off – A Music Label Disruptive Leadership Parties in the Sky When FIVE pushes the boundaries – It inspires me to do the same. This year, we launched two new initiatives, both first of their kinds in hospitality: 🔸 Fly FIVE, a private jet which takes hospitality to the skies 🔸 FIVE Music, a music label in partnership with global giant Warner Music Group These launches got the attention they deserved: Fly FIVE achieved a record-breaking potential reach of $1.17 billion in June, while FIVE Music saw the highest number of articles published in a single month—484 articles in April. While I believe in creativity when it comes to positioning, branding and outreach, I also believe that it’s important to get the basics right: ➡ A reliable network that is intentionally nurtured over the years ➡ Securing top-tier media coverage – and not settling for anything less ➡ Aligning our outreach with the business’ vision In every industry you have those who stick to the norms - And the few who take things to the next level. Pop Up Global ARE UNDOUBTEDLY THE NEXT GENERATION OF ENTERTAINMENT There are a number of ways in which we demonstrate this time and time again. But the one that I will forever drive home is the importance of culture. The fantastic company culture we have at Pop Up actually stems from a terrible experience as a performer during my singing career. The anxiety and lack of respect myself and others I worked with continuously experienced was the catalyst for my mission at Pop Up. However, being a kind and supportive business (although this just should be a given) has a number of commercial benefits that I find are often overlooked. I’ll give you the example that has contributed massively to our success. Word quickly spread within the performer world that Pop Up was the company to work for if you wanted to be treated with respect, celebrated for individuality and whole heartedly supported. As the word spread, we saw a drastic increase in the standard of talent and calibre of performer attending our auditions and ultimately being cast in our shows. This then meant that over time the quality of our product became unmatched. From our creatives to our on-stage talent we were all of a sudden working with the best of the best when it came to our industry. This then resulted in further success when it came to securing amazing jobs and the cycle continued. If companies can’t be kind and supportive for being kind and supportive’s sake - then maybe the commercial results of fantastic company culture may be incentive enough to put energy into improving working standards. Ultimately - something needs to change and I will forever be finding ways to encourage this change and have as many leaders behind me on this mission. HAPPY TUESDAY - LET’S MAKE IT A GOOD ONE
