Thursday April 17 2024.  We’ve just wrapped one of the most ambitious programs in our business with 9 emerging speakers delivering their Ted Style Talk directly to Carmine and Vanessa Gallo for the opportunity to receive real-time hot seat coaching from two global masters of story telling and communication. It is a full, 6 hour, live streaming studio production. Nerves have been high. Celebrations just as. Realising it’s almost 11pm in California, I race out the door to catch Carmine and Vanessa on the phone before they switch off for the night. On an adrenaline high, knowing we would be doing a full debrief later, the conversation flew. But one simple sentence anchored itself, and as I walked back into the green room to join everyone, I knew it was one I had to share immediately. Carmine simply said… “The only thing standing between them and a full speaking career is practice; that’s it. Their speeches are wonderful”. You have to practice. There is no way around it. If you want to be a great speaker – or even a good one – and you want to carve out a position of impact and influence through the speeches and presentations you deliver – you need to first create inhalable content. And then you need to practice. And that practice has to be in the arena, even if the arena is small. It has to be outside your own home, away from your best friends, and definitely not just rehearsing in your mind. The Keynote speech that I broke through to being a paid professional speaker with started with a small presentation to a group of (I think) about 12 people. It became the basis for the keynote I delivered to a Marie Claire event, was pressure tested further in business networking and small event rooms, evolved into the keynote I delivered as the opening speaker for a roadshow with a professional speaker from the USA and became my signature keynote - The Resilience Lie. It did not start where it ended. And actually I recently went and found the first iteration of The Resilience Lie that I delivered and was paid for and I was literally horrified. For a split second! The original version of the Keynote was good enough to get great stages and to start getting paid for it. But it improved dramatically over time. Why? Because I was delivering it. I was in the arena. I was practicing it every opportunity I could find. It was on top of a foundation of learning how to craft and curate stories and speeches and presentations. But I didn’t once stop believing I needed to practice it. It is only in the arena – no matter how small – that we become better speakers. Which means the only thing between you and the speaker you most want to be? Is speaking more. Jacqueline x PS. Speaking more matters so much we have added 9 Speaking Practice Days to the Paid Speaker Accelerator. Want to find out more? Reply with Practice and your best contact number and I will call.

I absolutely agree Jacqueline Brooker CSP. Speaking is one of those skills where you only get better by doing, and there is no substitute for practice in front of a live audience. I’m excited by the journey ahead and looking forward to learning from your experience.
