it's always a plus to propagate seeds in a nursery prior to direct sowing, as the latter has several advantages: 1. allows easier seedling management. 2. enables a farmer to select high-performing seedlings for transplanting. 3. encourages uniform plant growth. thanks to Latia Agribusiness Solutions Ltd for assisting with seedling propagation.

For those worried about declining ag productivity and food production under climate change, I give you Brazil. The scale of potential crop acreage expansion in Brazil is simply jaw-dropping. A recent study by Emprapa estimates there are another 70 million acres of "degraded" pasture that can be converted into grain production. Much of this can also be put into a soybean-corn double crop rotation, bringing the potential acreage expansion north of 100 million acres. Acreage expansion in Brazil is an underappreciated megatrend in global agriculture. Thanks to my farmdoc colleagues for writing a great article on the topic!
POTENTIAL FOR CROP EXPANSION IN BRAZIL BASED ON PASTURELAND AND DOUBLE-CROPPING — by Joana Colussi, Nick Paulson, James Baltz and Carl Zulauf The potential for Brazil to expand its agricultural output through converting degraded pastureland into cropland is large. With approximately 70 million acres identified as suitable for conversion, Brazil could increase its total planted area by 35% compared to the current crop season. The largest quantities of degraded pastureland with potential for conversion are found in the Center-West and Northern states. Furthermore, the intensification of existing cropland through double-cropping of soybeans with second-crop corn presents another avenue for Brazil to bolster its agricultural production. With approximately 50% of the soybean area already dedicated to cultivating safrinha in the 2022/2023 crop season, there’s ample room for further expansion, particularly in the states of Mato Grosso, Goiás, and Mato Grosso do Sul.
