I'm sort of shocked that Colorado is considering setting prices for medicine, not understand that this behavior almost automatically creates black markets for whatever you do that to (gasoline, medicine, food, etc). IT's also bad for pharmacies, which is what Krystalyn Weaver and I discuss in this podcast.

Our healthcare ecosystem is fragile. Let’s hope the political sound bites of “reducing medication costs” don’t superficially address an issue—like putting a bandaid on a bullethole that causes our networks of Independents and LTC pharmacies to bleed out. Drug costing is highly complex. We need to consider the impact on the whole system, from manufacturers and wholesalers to payors, PBMs and the pharmacies that keep Americans healthy. I love the way Mr. Rosenbloom puts it, “Senior Care Pharmacy Coalition (SCPC) and our members support lower drug prices for consumers, but long-term care (LTC) pharmacies must not become be collateral damage in the drug pricing debate. Negotiating Medicare Part D drug prices may lower out of pocket costs for some consumers, but it will have an unanticipated and adverse impact on LTC pharmacies. Eight of the ten drugs currently under negotiation are heavily prescribed to patients in long-term care settings and account for significant LTC pharmacy revenues…Current price negotiations materially impact their net margins and will result in LTC pharmacy reimbursements dropping to unsustainable levels, threatening our very existence.”
