Just a moment explaining how the type of therapy I use (transactional analysis psychotherapy) supports clients struggling with alcohol and substance use difficulties. Research shows that we equip clients to engage with more healthy ways of connecting to themselves and others. We help them understand why they turned to alcohol and that it is the symptom of underlying sadness/distress. We help de-shame their experiences. We explore feelings of distress and loneliness and teach good communication skills and help build a better sense of belonging within their lives, help manage stress better (which reduces cravings), help build decision making skills and build new life goals and routines/structures, to maintain hope and promote a good recovery.
