With Cannes now firmly in the rearview mirror, we thought we’d take a moment to share our team’s key takeaways from one of the most talked-about events on the advertising calendar. 🔹 The True Essence of Cannes: Cannes is about more than the prestigious Lions awards. It's about the people, the conversations, and the serendipitous encounters that make the festival truly special. 🔹 Sustainability Focus: While sustainability discussions are less prominent this year, it's crucial for long-term growth. Shout out to those like the Conscious Advertising Network and Good-Loop for keeping it on the agenda. 🔹 UK's Global Impact: The UK continues to play a central role in international advertising, with record exports and strong representation, thanks to an excellent program by UKAEG. 🔹 Empower Café: The Empower Café highlighted the strength and vulnerability of women leaders, providing a supportive space to network and share stories, helping to tackle Imposter Syndrome head-on. The Café offered a vital hub for networking and respite, with inspirational stories shared throughout the week. In her sparetime she fuels her energy by playing as much basketball as possible, and also volunteers in the communication committee within the Swedish Basketball Association. Sophie Hochstraate, Group Head Global Client Development, Mediaplus Group Sophie was born in Salzburg, Austria, but her academic journey took her to Munich, London, and Paris. She has since returned to Munich. Sophie's association with Mediaplus International commenced during its early stages when the team consisted of just three individuals. Over time, she witnessed the remarkable evolution of the team, which has expanded to encompass more than 130 professionals representing more than 20 different nationalities. The international community that was built over the years now consists of more than 2,500 people, across 25 markets and three continents. This experience has been nothing short of inspiring as the company transformed from a startup, with the backing of a giant, Serviceplan Group, into a globally recognized international agency that stands as a formidable contender in the industry landscape. Sophie firmly believes that the sustainable success of any enterprise hinges on placing the human being at the heart of strategic thinking.

Cannes Lions are the undisputed, top marketing & communications awards. 3 criteria / lessons this year's jury used to judge the world's campaigns, and by proxy are an incredible guide for us: 1) Is this an idea with earned at the heart; if you strip everything back does it still have value exchange, momentum, is it useful or entertaining? 2) Relevancy and cultural relevancy – does it make sense, feel authentic and credible for the brand and the audience they are trying to connect to, and for the world we live in? 3) The impact of the work, above and beyond reach metrics – what did it achieve, how did it move the dial? This is WPP picking up Creative Company of the Year at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity last week. In this weird and wonderful world of ours, this is the biggest prize of them all at the biggest show of them all. Now look at the guy holding up the trophy. He's surrounded by some GREAT people - some of the very best ever to do what we do. I'll pick out Rob Reilly, Liz Taylor, Devika Bulchandani, I bet the legendary Pandeys are up there, and Debbi Vandeven, and leaders from across all the group's agencies. Mark Read of course. They're obviously very happy. They're also saying thank you to the guy with the trophy. That's the orchestrator, connector, assessor, right-hand, left-hand and all-round creative excellence mastermind who played a role no-one outside the group will see. WPP won 160 Lions last week. That needs an extraordinary volume of great work of course. But that's not enough. It can't happen without the kind of intelligence, planning and diligence that Eric brings to that team. He and his team have done it before. They'll do it again. And while he might not be as 'visible' as a Rob or a Nils or an Anselmo or a Piyush or a Rob'n'Lol or a Colleen or a Jeff or a Dave or a Liz or a Margaret or a Cindy - everyone on that stage knows it it wouldn't have happened without him. I love the visibility of this industry, and our collective ability to make change happen. I love many of those leading the charge at the front. I also love that there can be less visible heroes too: the quiet influence and the soft power. Eric Monnet - chapeau mon ami.

The reason why PR is becoming a powerful tool is that you are able to shape a positive opinion of your brand by staying credible. But how can you stay credible? This is where the onus lies with brands to be authentic and stay true in what ever they try to communicate. By remaining honest and following the strictest moral standards and ethics and presenting your brand as a true brand will only help your brand to stay healthy in the consumer’s mind. The brand will be undisturbed and in the long run it will help the brand to further strengthen its image and equity.
