Fishing plays a crucial role in helping to meet global food supply needs by providing a significant source of protein along with other essential nutrients such as omega-3, to people around the world. It can also help alleviate the demand for land-based animal agriculture, reducing the environmental impact associated with livestock farming, such as deforestation, water usage, and greenhouse gas emissions. It is a delicate balancing act, and important to remember that sustainable fisheries management and practices are crucial for the long-term viability of this precious food source. #GlobalFoodSecurity #SustainableFishing 

The landscape of my town has lost almost 70% of its forest cover and the land has been degraded by extensive livestock for over 70 years. This is not the Amazon region, but the Andean region where #Afforestation, #Reforestation, and #Revegetation projects with mid to small landowners have a huge potential to generate #HighIntegrity #Carbon and #Biodiversity credits. #MaceoAntioquia

Up to 50% of rangelands are degraded. Restoration investments are below those for forests and have even been put at risk due to ill-advised tree-planting schemes. Wild goats and camels are two of the most significant invasive species in Australia, with severe impacts on agriculture and nature. Introduced to Australia in the 1800s for transportation, milk, and meat production, these animals have since become a serious problem. Wild goats are known for their voracious appetite and are capable of consuming a wide variety of vegetation. Their feeding habits can cause significant damage to both crops and native vegetation, leading to habitat degradation, loss of biodiversity, and soil erosion. Moreover, feral goats can compete with native wildlife and domesticated animals for food, and are known to spread diseases to livestock. Camels, on the other hand, are particularly problematic in arid and semi-arid regions of the country. Australia is home to the world's largest population of wild camels, with over 1,3 million animals roaming the Outback. These animals have a significant impact on the environment and agricultural industry, damaging water sources, infrastructure, and vegetation.

In Uganda, Wairaka fishermen on the shores of Lake Victoria have been fishing for the past several generations. However, a combination of illegal fishing and overzealous enforcement of fishing laws has meant that locals are struggling to make ends meet. Fishermen have been slowly adopting caged fish farming as an alternative and a solution to their issue. The Wairaka’s landing site now has three cages —  the first was provided by the government — and a collective group is responsible for the inputs: fingerlings, feed, and the boat required to go out to care for them. It is believed that cages can produce as much as 30 tons of fish in six months, and a project funded by the European Union in collaboration with WorldFish and the (Food and Agriculture Organization) FAO is working to expand caged fish farming in the Lake Victoria basin. Nonetheless, barriers remain and uncertainty continues to linger. The relatively high cost of feed and snatching by outside fishermen could negatively impact locals’ livelihoods, and while the activity can protect local fish stocks and biodiversity, it is yet to be seen how the potential escaping of fish from the cages will affect Lake Victoria’s ecosystem. It is hoped that science evidence-based information will help contribute to policy formulation and expand the operation across the region.
