As we celebrate World Senior Citizens Day, we are reminded of the importance of honoring and supporting our elders. This year's theme, "Aging Unbound," calls on us to challenge the stereotypes and limitations that often surround aging. Too often, we see older adults as being frail, dependent, and isolated. But the reality is that many seniors are active, engaged, and living meaningful lives. They are entrepreneurs, volunteers, and mentors. They are grandparents, parents, and friends. We need to break down the barriers that prevent older adults from fully participating in society. We need to create opportunities for them to stay active, engaged, and connected. We need to ensure that they have access to the resources they need to live independently and with dignity. Here are some ways you can help: -Volunteer your time at a senior center or retirement home. -Donate to an organization that supports older adults. -Advocate for policies that benefit older adults. -Challenge the stereotypes about aging. -Educate yourself about the challenges and opportunities of aging. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of older adults. Students from across the country share their amazing service stories with us! By having your employees read and vote on stories and awarding scholarships to the top students, your employees can be inspired by these amazing stories of positive action. Check out this great example of a student story: "A family friend was beginning to build a nursing home for the abandoned elderly people of Guatemala. As soon as I heard about it, I knew it was my opportunity to make a difference. I decided that I was going to run a full marathon – 26.2 miles – to raise a goal of $5,000 to pay for the roof of the nursing home. I knew that my young age of 12 years old would help me raise more money. Luckily, I was right as Fox News picked up the story and when I finished the marathon in just over 4 and a half hours, I had raised $15,000. I am glad that I pushed myself at that age. It is now a constant reminder that I can always do more, although it may not be as crazy as running a marathon. Since then, I have continued serving the local elderly, who I feel are often forgotten. At first, I started doing a series of interviews with the elderly. Originally, I was going to make a “book of memories” for the elderly in my town, but from these interviews, I learned that they did not care about being in a book, they just wanted to be heard. I realized that loneliness is one of the biggest problems in nursing homes. This summer, I continued that concept by starting a pen pal system between a local school and a retirement home for the elderly nuns that once ran that school. Someday I hope to continue this young-old pen pal project at a larger level. From these projects, I have learned that when it comes to service, expectations are often very low, but that is never an excuse to go easy on yourself." - Gibbs H., Student Member of the Humanity Rising Movement. Spreading dollars. Getting back change. Mecklenburg County's American Rescue Plan Act funds are helping 75 local organizations transform our community. Every cent multiplies, reaching and helping many neighbors. From streets to neighborhoods and homes. That's #TheMeckEffect. Together they're tackling important issues like: - Affordable Housing and Homelessness; - Behavioral Health and Health Equity; - Childcare and Early Childcare Development; - Parks, Environment and Infrastructure; - Workforce and Economic Development. Some of these organizations include Pineville Neighbors Place, which has helped over 190 households with rental support (averaging about $1,100 per household).
