Research, Strategy and Design | United States Digital Service

Exciting update: I'll be representing the United States Digital Service at the Design Research Society (DRS) 2024 keynote alongside my colleagues Rachael Dietkus, LCSW and Whitney Robinson 🇺🇸✨ We'll be sharing our approach to three Performance.gov Life Experience projects: Surviving a Disaster, Having a Child, and Facing a Financial Shock. Over the past year+, we've partnered with dozens of teams across federal, state, and local governments to center the needs and experiences of members of the public and front-line workers to improve access to government services at times when they matter most. If you'll be attending DRS2024, please don't hesitate to reach out! I'd love to connect.

Announcing the keynote events on Wednesday, June 26th: REFLECTIONS: Designing with Complexity in Civic Spaces Wednesday, June 26th at 9:00 a.m. EDT Speakers: Rachael Dietkus, LCSW, U.S. Digital Service Chelsea Mauldin, Public Policy Lab Whitney Robinson, U.S. Digital Service Izzie Zahorian, U.S. Digital Service The public sphere is the site where designing within complex, multi-stakeholder environments is often most fraught and challenging, yet impactful. In this nuanced keynote, Chelsea Mauldin from the Public Policy Lab, followed by Rachael Dietkus, Whitney Robinson, and Izzie Zahorian from the U.S. Digital Service will share challenges and insights gained from researching and designing with and for civic spaces. Design shapes our interaction with government services, which are crucial during significant life events. These pivotal moments often hinge on accessible government services, yet many find themselves entangled in a maze of websites, offices, and contact numbers just to utilize essential services. Every touchpoint with the government is a chance to demonstrate how thoughtful design can save time, enhance service quality, and meet the high standards of public expectations. Designing the Global PhD Program Wednesday, June 26th at 12 p.m. EDT Speakers: Michael Arnold Mages, Northeastern University Ramia Mazé University of the Arts London Sarah Teasley, RMIT University Martin Tironi, Pontifical Catholic University of Chile This panel will explore the future of doctoral education in design, focusing on the integration of practice and theory. Panelists will discuss the unique nature of practice-based PhDs, reflecting on their experiences as candidates, supervisors, and researchers. The conversation will explore how designerly approaches create knowledge, the impact of reflective practice, and the interplay between research methods and design practice. Aiming to articulate the value of practice-based research as a dominant form of knowledge production in Design, the panel will highlight the diversity of methodologies and the contributions to knowledge that emerge from practice-led inquiries as an indicator of a rich and fertile ground for knowledge production. This conversation aims to shape the future direction of doctoral studies in design, fostering innovative ways to merge practice with scholarly research. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e8rP3YZC
