With my colleagues we're currently working on a study for the EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) titled 'Advancing cross-system solutions to address electricity network challenges', and we're presenting our draft results this Thursday - registration is still open for those interested! 💡 #electricitynetworks #systemsolutions #ancillaryservices #flexibility #digitalisation
On Thursday 23rd May, Trinomics will host a workshop to present the draft results of our study for the EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) on 'Advancing cross-system solutions to address electricity network challenges'. 📖⚡This study aims to provide a better understanding on the challenges of the ongoing energy transition for electricity networks, and the solutions available within different systems to maximise the efficiency and effectiveness of investments and operations in the electricity system. 🔋The focus is on characterizing cross-system solutions (outside of the network sub-system) addressing the lack of sufficient network capacity or ancillary service needs, identifying barriers and best practices to their upscaling - particularly related to high transaction costs - and propose associated recommendations to further their deployment. 📅Are you interested in hearing about and discussing these important issues for the European electricity system? Joint us on May 23rd from 9h30 to 11h00 CEST. ✍️Registration is required for the workshop and can be done through the following link: https://lnkd.in/dvYu2E_3

Volunteer president of the NGOs Voices of Nuclear and EcoHumans-WePlanet France. General Director of the TerraWater Institute.
Thank you IDCA - International Data Center Authority for your invitation to this very interesting discussion. Really worth addressing from the Data Centers' own perspective: Data Centers do meet with unprecedented piling-up challenges. ⚫Quantity DCs are already hard-negotiating grid access and supply with their local grid managers to cope with a forecast of x2 energy demand by 2028. AI adding to it further more, requiring more data, more firm power, and even more risk of delays in getting the power they need. ⚫Quality This power needs to be 24/7 firm power. That they provide data for casual streaming, critical strategic data of geopolitical relevance, AI training with intensive-energy consumption use over (relatively) short periods of time, or regular lower-level AI uses over time, the cost overrun of dispatching their operations is still far too great to be acceptable for their balance-sheet. ⚫Requirement This power needs to be clean = emission-free + environmentally friendly. ⚪ Hydrogen, ammonia, and other alternative fuels are energy vectors, not energy sources: no need to downgrade the yield by imposing successive transformations to a primary source. ⚪ Wind and solar will provide approx. 20% of your needs, complementing your main energy sources, but won't suffice, even in favorable locations (Google, Microsoft, Nucor and Amazon don't mention them anymore as a main source (though they now still get it wrong on large long term batteries and hydrogen) ⚪ Hydro and geothermal can suffice, but only if location-bound, massively available ▶ Nuclear is the only one able to achieve the DC' search for their own personal nexus: - reliable baseload power - stable competitive price, with visibility up the lifetime of your DC operations - availability in space (in regions where DC's mostly want to develop, already qualifying nuclear operations) + ability to answer national security requirements - to which many DC's are bound. 🔺 BUT as "time is of essence" ➡ For immediate availability? Connecting to a nuclear-powered grid, supplemented with renewables (non biomass), is your best short-term option. ➡ You plan ahead and want a dedicated supply? - Connect to large plants with offtake agreements (now or in 10-years for construction time), for ex. in an industrial zone around an NPP - Purchase your own dedicated Small Modular Reactor, or aggregate your needs with others and get yourselves one, either current designs LWRs, less efficient but there sooner (roughly 10-years), or new advanced (roughly 20 years) - (and no, not fusion, fusion is R&D, count 50 years) (I know I am deemed pessimistic by some - new nuclear venturers, and optimistic by many (nuclear opponents), but I prefer being called reasonable) Now, Data Centers have not one issue POWER, they have two: COLD. For that, floating off-shore nuclear power plants may be a rather attractive option --> dear Roger Strukhoff and Dikran K. do include this option in next month' edition on Cooling 🤗!

Great presentation summarizing European experience with "connect & manage" approaches used to speed up the interconnection of new generating resources. Note an important difference to U.S. power markets: without nodal prices and LMP-based congestion management, European markets tend to fully compensate generators with "firm" interconnection rights for any congestion-related curtailments. Thanks to mark norton for putting this together and ESIG (Energy Systems Integration Group) and G-PST for hosting the informative webinar. 📢 Interoperability is critical for driving consumer adoption of energy management solutions. That's why it is a key focus of our work! While providers of smart energy products and services have created impressive technologies for home energy management, we need to ensure: 1️⃣ They are connected in a way that can empower consumers and maximise savings 2️⃣ That devices and systems communicate with each other for their benefits to be fully realised To demonstrate how this can be done, our video details how we combine individual solutions from different vendors (our members) into one interoperable architecture for metering and demand-side management. The Cs of RSP | Keeping your customers and machines connected by Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP and eSIM) | Senior Business Development Manager at IDEMIA
Interoperability. A critical topic for a critical infrastructure. How do you ensure proper communication between devices and systems? One solution is to support communication with technology which demonstrated their maturity and interoperability in an environment were myriads of devices had been working hassle free since decades. And if there is on top as well an improved system. An innovative system. Which allows device fleet owners to change connectivity. Which may be required due to commercial or service terms. That’s real bargain. #remoteSIMProvisioning #eSIM #weAreIdemia IDEMIA Edin Muminagic Stephane Jacquelin Jason Rousseau-Hall Greg Graver

We can get much more capacity from our existing #transmission grid, probably 30%+ more with very little additional investment. Lots of structural reasons (cost allocation) why folks aren't unlocking this capacity. But with load growth and resiliency, electric utilities and their regulators are increasingly looking to Grid Enhancement Technologies and the additional ~$4B in GRIP funding from DOE as a way to accelerate the deployment of these mature technologies that have been extensively tested throughout the world. Join distinguished leaders from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for a webinar on December 12 from 1:30 – 2:30pm ET. This session will delve into early insights from the forthcoming Innovative Grid Deployment Pathways to Commercial Liftoff report, including four priority technologies identified for greater near-term deployment. This new Liftoff Report will explore strategies to accelerate deployment of innovative, but commercially available grid technologies, which are crucial for bolstering grid reliability, resilience, and efficiency. The full report is set for release in early 2024.
