The Turbulent Road of an International Scholar in Dubai
Dubai, often called the 'City of Gold,' is not just a global hub for business but also a hotbed for education. Over the years, the Emirate has attracted students from across the world with enticing scholarship programs. However, as an international student, I have learned that this golden opportunity does not come without its set of challenges.
🔍 Job Search as an International Student: Dubai is renowned for its booming industries and cosmopolitan work culture. However, as a foreign graduate, the job market can be a labyrinth. With priority often given to local candidates or those with regional experience, the search becomes increasingly competitive.
📈 A Hub for Mid to Senior-Level Positions: Dubai’s job market heavily leans towards experienced professionals. Entry-level positions for fresh graduates, especially international students, are harder to come by. It often feels as though the city's employment scene is tailored for mid to senior-level professionals, leaving fresh grads grappling for a firm foothold.
💰 The Rising and Unpredictable Cost of Living: From the glitzy malls to the serene beaches, the allure of Dubai is undeniable. But with it comes a rising cost of living. Rent, transportation, and even basic amenities can sometimes stretch a student's budget. Additionally, with the rapid growth of the city, costs can be unpredictable. One month, you might be comfortably managing expenses; the next, an unexpected hike in prices may throw your budget off balance.
Despite these challenges, Dubai remains a land of opportunities. With its rich blend of cultures, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and the chance to be a part of something monumental, the experiences you gain here are unparalleled. As with any journey, there will be bumps along the way, but the key is resilience and adaptability.
To my fellow international students and recent graduates in Dubai, I urge you to stay persistent, network widely, and embrace the unique experience that this city offers. The road may be turbulent, but the destination is worth every challenge.
