ITDP, WRI Africa, ZRST and ZIPAR hosted a workshop on low-carbon transport in Lusaka and explored strategies to improve conditions for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users in the city. Key highlights included: ✅ Discussions on integrating non-motorised transport and accessibility ✅ Plans to establish a complete NMT network across the city ✅ Presentations on the digital mapping of Lusaka's public transport network ✅ Participatory planning to identify priority interventions for walking and cycling facilities and intersection treatments This was an important step towards inclusive, low-emission mobility in Zambia. The newly formed Transport Advisory Committee will now work to coordinate these vital initiatives.

Such a wonderful effort for green transport. Well done! Unfortunetely this will be illegal in Singapore due to a new 'group cycling' rule since 2019. Group size is limited to 5 if riding single file or 10 if riding abreast. Each group must stay at least 30 meters from any other groups. Imagine how this cheerful group of students and parrents can navigate the road if they have to follow such challenging rules? #GreenTransport #GroupCyclingRule #UniquelySingapore

Nairobi Toto Mass 3.0 was an absolute joy and success! We had our largest number of kids yet! Toto Mass is our kids version of Critical Mass. The rain attempted to stop the ride but once again the kids, parents and caregivers were not to be stopped. The reception these young riders received this past Sunday from other road users gives us so much hope. Children have a way of working those heartstrings 😅 Special thanks to the Nairobi Area Traffic Police and KURA (Kenya Urban Roads Authority) for the support. Changing a culture is indeed a communal effort. Slowly but surely we are transforming Nairobi into a cycling city, one group ride at a time.

It is really sad. How important is safety when selecting a destination to visit? I work with people from across the globe and they all comment on how beautiful South Africa 🇿🇦 is and if it was safe they would love to visit. As a proud South African and an ambassador to my home - my PC answer is “like every city, you have safe and unsafe areas……" Should tour organizers and MICE Organizers ask for safety stats as part is the RFP. Companies asks for ESG and DEI statistics- why not safety. More and more - destinations are marketing the safety of there cities or taking very transparent steps in addressing the problem. We seem to avoid the subject- we need to start to question it more.

I am saddened to be a South African, South Africa once a jewel in Africa's crown and a lesson to the world left by Mr Mandela on reconciliation, is on a downward spiral in to a deep dark hole that it will not be able to dig itself out from, I have just read an article on three runners being mugged on an ultra trail run, that had managed to successfully attract over 2000 international participants. When is the government going to realise, action and hard action needs to be taken, the more and more of these incidents occurring, will drive international business and tourism away, of which is very much needed for SA's economy. This is a link to the article. https://lnkd.in/etfKGN62 The government should have acted long time ago, but rather late than never, it's time to take action and decisive action.

Taking Action for a Safer Tomorrow: DOSB & World Aquatics in Rwanda and Uganda In the realm of meaningful initiatives, there's one that's close to our hearts – drowning prevention. Together with World Aquatics, the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) is making a substantial impact in Rwanda and Uganda. This essential work is generously funded by the German Federal Foreign Office. Drowning is a global issue, and it's time we took proactive steps to combat it. That's where Sven Spannekrebs, a renowned German swimming expert, comes into the picture. For the next six weeks, Sven will be in Rwanda, imparting his expertise to a dedicated group of trainers and coaches. Our mission extends beyond the pool; it's about instilling confidence, building skills, and ultimately, saving lives. By joining forces with DOSB, World Aquatics, and the German Federal Foreign Office, we are on a collective journey to prevent water-related accidents and create safer communities. This initiative exemplifies the power of international collaboration and a shared commitment to a safer world. Together, we're working toward a future where everyone can enjoy the water with peace of mind. #DrowningPrevention #WaterSafety #Rwanda #DOSB #WorldAquatics #SvenSpannekrebs #GermanForeignOffice #AuswärtigesAmt

I am honoured to have witnessed today the final presentation 📺 of the 1st Agora Verkehrswende Fellowship Programme on sustainable mobility in cooperation with and funded by the #RethinkingTransport project of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. Fellows from 8 African countries 🌍 have been working for 4 weeks on practical approaches and solutions on how think tanks can help to leapfrog to sustainable transport in Africa. The following ideas 💡 have been generated by the African experts: Courage Adjei (Ghana) Establishing a think tank on sustainable transport Duncan Byencit (Nigeria) A 'living' plan for Nigeria to transform transport Owen Mwaura (South Africa) Paratransit - minibus taxis - operations including open source data repository Sarah Abdelkader (Egypt) Cycling organization to change awareness Emmanuel BAMA (Cote d'Ivoire) NGO on improve access to transport and energy data Hilda TN Nathnael (Namibia) Engaging stakeholders to cooperate and create awareness on cycling Malindi Msoni (Zambia) Assessing mobility poverty and inequality by a center for mobility studies Ben Mokaya (Kenya) Industry, academia and think tank collaboration on scenario-based policy recommendations. One of the lessons is that think tanks need to tailor recommendations to the interests of different stakeholders. In this context, the visualisation of real-world data 📈 and scenarios is of paramount importance. In August 2024, the next round of our fellowship starts. Happy New Year! I have been reflecting on 2023, and looked back over the last 14 years of Ten Toes Africa, Inc, when it started as an idea written down on a "napkin" or piece of paper in 2010, when I flew back to Zimbabwe after being away for 10 years. - The FIFA world cup was hosted by South Africa that year, and there was a football crazy buzz about being back in Southern Africa! Electric. But sadly, many many children were suffering. - Many not in school. Millions starving. Millions more, hopeless at an unofficial unemployment rate above 50%. Life expenctancy rate had dropped to around 45, and now only just rose to 60 years old.. - These calamities include: the severe contraction of the economy; a doubling of the percentage of the population living in poverty; organized violence perpetrated by the government; the breakdown of basic services; the erosion of the country's economic foundation and the massive emigration of professionals..... - So what could we do about it. - We formed Ten Toes Africa, Inc. and registered as a 501.3.c in New Jersey, to help children of southern Africa. - Education, Mentorship, Sport! #Zimbabwe #SouthAfrica #Botswana #mozambique #Zambia #Soccer #youthdevelopment #education #mentorship #sport #scholarship https://lnkd.in/eVVgvgDc

Did you know that 78% of people in Africa rely on walking for their daily travel? In Zambia, citizens spend 55 minutes daily walking or cycling, and 65% of daily trips in Lusaka are on foot. Yet, urban infrastructure falls short of supporting pedestrian mobility. Join us in exploring the findings of "Walking the Un-walkable", a project inspired by the French tradition of Flâneur, aimed at understanding and improving walkability in Lusaka. We've mapped out the challenges pedestrians face and identified opportunities for change. Dive into the report to discover how we can make our cities more pedestrian-friendly ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gJprk-2Z
