How you can gain an edge by pursuing a structural engineering internship before graduation

Each summer, ABES Engineering brings aboard talented interns to help us in various capacities and to give them the opportunity to learn about engineering, business and entrepreneurship. We're grateful to the Peer Power Earn and Learn program for helping to make these internships possible. Today we’d like to introduce you to one of those interns. Name: Zaramagi Kayihura Age: 19 years old. Where do you attend school? I am a junior at University of Tennessee, Knoxville. 📝 What does your internship at ABES entail? 👷 One of my duties is learning and working on AutoCAD and Civil 3D designs, which includes understanding and applying company and industry standards. I have also been able to learn the BlueBeam software, and I have started using it to generate quantity takeoffs. What are your career goals? I am majoring in aerospace engineering. 🚀 I want to work in rocket propulsion and/or guidance, but just about everything in the aerospace field excites me. What are some of your hobbies? I am a part of my school’s rocketry team. I like to work out and play basketball in my free time. 🏀 I also play a little bit of piano. 🎹 What do you enjoy most about the ABES internship? I have enjoyed learning the way an engineering business operates and seeing the different roles everybody plays in ensuring both that work is coming in, as well as that the clients’ expectations are exceeded. What’s one thing you’ve learned about engineering or entrepreneurship? last week was my first week at ELARABY Group as a mechanical intern in the summer internship program for 2024. Through it, I have learned about some topics. our instructor Eng/ahmed sobhy talked with us about: 1-Occupational safety and health -Occupational safety and health goals. - Types of dangers in the working environment. - How to prevent and eliminate these dangers. - Civil defence Then our instructor/Islam Hamed talked with us about: - What's the meaning of soft skills. - How important the soft skills are. - Types of soft skills. - Time management and its techniques. - Emotional intelligence . - Personality types. 2024 Internship Spotlight: Joshua Calfy "So far I have discovered that Mechanical Engineering is in more places than just manufacturing as I originally thought. I have also discovered that all engineers are problem solvers for many different sections in the work force. Many engineers work with other engineers to bounce ideas and strategies off of each other for better solutions. It reminds me of classes. If you are struggling with a topic there is a really good chance that someone in the same office has seen the struggle and knows how to deal with it or to make it easier, you just have to ask, and not be ashamed of not knowing everything. Engineers need to learn to rely on each other and be willing to step out of their comfort zone and ask the questions to the things that are hard or that you don’t fully understand to become a better engineer and coworker. I’m excited about this career because it is completely different than what I thought I would be doing. It is a different industry and it requires a different set of tools, but with my work history and work ethic, I feel that I have the proper tools to make a good addition to the team. Everyone in the company has made me feel welcome and a part of the team." Studying is nothing without Practical Application 🧠 . To uplift my practical knowledge, I have got into a good organization which helped me to gain knowledge various insights in construction field. Skills I have learned through this internship: 1.Communication skills - details of project. 2. Designing skills using CAD software. 3. Division of work in construction sector .
