It's almost Shavuot, and we love sharing this artwork Idea School student Sarah Gorbatov made during her sophomore year at the school, as part of a Beit Midrash project during which students studied Megillat Ruth. We're also linking Sarah's collection of multimedia artworks and her artist statements, written and oral explanations of her work. Here are some tips when thinking about choosing art as the product of learning for a unit: * Connect with the art teacher in your school to decide on how complicated the medium should be and what role he/she should take in the project. If the medium is complex, you'll need the art teacher's support throughout the project, making it an interdisciplinary one. If it's not, make sure you do a model of the project first so you can troubleshoot students through the process and have one to show them. * Make sure the rubric for the project includes the content--text and commentaries--and skills you want students to acquire in the learning unit and ensure that the artwork will reflect students' mastery of your learning objectives. This is why the artist statement is important: it will be the place where viewers will be able to see how the artwork reflects the unit's learning goals. * Scaffold the students into the final product not only by making sure they've mastered the content and skills, but by introducing them to ways of visually representing ideas. Again, you may need the art teacher's help with this as well. Art isn't for everyone, so don't worry if you don't want to try it, but as you can see, it's one great option for students, who can create beautiful and complex images that open our eyes to new ways of understanding Jewish texts and commentaries. https://lnkd.in/eNaAXMmM

Teaching Throwback Thursday: Portrait drawing, middle-school Art class Drawing another person can be an emotionally taxing (or rewarding) experience at any age, but particularly so during adolescence. As such, it is a rich opportunity for "teachable-moments" involving social-emotional learning (SEL), identity, and representation. Looking at and quietly observing another student in a directed manner is a challenging activity, sometimes met with behaviors of closure and barriers of self-protection. Structurally, I could assess a student's cognitive development through age-equivalency comparisons when simply observing, for example, their relational placement of facial features. (Piaget!) Drawing with an ink-pen was always preferred, in that there was a heightened awareness on the part of the student about the permanency of the mark that they were making on the page. (No "Undo" button!) Round-table critiques would always finish the drawing sessions. Only positive comments were allowed. First, a positive reaction to the artwork of another student. After the positive comment, they would formulate one supportive suggestion about how the other artist might improve their artworks going forward. Each successive student would pick a new artwork so that every artist was included, and no one would be left out of the communal social process. I would ask each student to verbally summarize their own successes and challenges with the drawing process, what worked for them, and what was difficult for them. Ideally, a class would do a portrait session at the start of the school semester, or the school year, and then a second identical session at the close of the semester or year. This was extremely valuable for the student (as well as for me, of course), in that they could see the artistic progress that they had achieved over time when comparing the two drawing sessions when placed directly in front of them. #tbt #teaching #middleschool #portrait #drawing #socialemotionallearning #SEL #K8 #K12 #portraitdrawing #ink #inkpen #cognitive #cognitivedevelopment #Piaget

Here are some ideas for my didactic sequence based on the story from the book "Elmer"🐘🌈, carried out in elementary school classes - Early Years. 1. Colorful Elephant Masks: You can provide paper or fabric masks representing Elmer's colorful face. Children can wear them during the story, making the experience more interactive and engaging.🎭 2. Elephant Painting: Before telling the story, you can organize a painting activity where children paint pictures of elephants, encouraging creativity and artistic expression.🎨 3. Illustrated Book: The book "Elmer" is available in PDF format on the internet. Show or read it during the storytelling. The colorful illustrations in the book are an excellent way to visually depict Elmer's differences. 📙 4. Collage Panel: Create a collage panel with images of elephants in various colors and inspirational phrases about acceptance and diversity. This can be used as a focal point during the storytelling. ✂️ 5. Elephant Puzzles: Provide elephant puzzles for the children to assemble before or after the story. This can symbolize how all the different pieces fit together, just like Elmer's message. 🧩 6. Elephant Paw Prints: Stamp colorful elephant footprints on paper or fabric as part of the activity. The footprints can represent Elmer's unique journey. 🐾 7. Discussion Cards: Create cards with questions about the story and its message that can be discussed after reading to encourage reflection. 🤔💬💭 I hope these ideas help make the storytelling of "Elmer" more engaging and meaningful for the children. 😊💓💕🎒
