Sock puppets include online identities created to praise, defend, or support a person or organization, to manipulate public opinion, or to circumvent restrictions such as viewing a social media account that a user is blocked from. Sock puppets are unwelcome in many online communities and forums. #cyberpsychology #socialengineering

Interesting, this is the first time I've seen this social dynamic really illustrated clearly. When I ran WildTangent we had the worlds largest online "casual" game audience which meant a HUGE number of kids. I went on to run one of the world's largest social media sites. We learned a great deal about the dynamics of kid/parent behavior online. One of the major lessons was how easy it was to confuse adult and kid behavior because kids were often sharing a parents computers and using a parents accounts. One of the huge challenges with running one of the first online game markets was figuring out how to protect kids without collecting a lot of data about them. We quickly discovered that kid "behavior" was easily identified analytically without knowing anything about the specific player. I've written a lot about this in the past but in this context the point is the shockingly poor understanding of online kid behavior that is reflected in all kinds of media and market reporting. One of the many things we don't seem to grasp about online kid behavior is that kids are more tech savvy than we think. They spend a huge amount of time socially interacting online, they love to create fake accounts, lie about their age and engage in all kinds of fantasy role-playing, toxic trolling and generally obnoxious behavior that they think is funny and entertaining. This kind of toxic socializing is part of online gaming culture where kids are playing a highly competitive game in a fantasy environment populated by a mixture of AI players and real people. Being absolutely horrendous to one another, cheating as much as possible, pretending to be adults, causing outrage, getting banned and sneaking back into a community, is all part of the "fun". When I make these wild claims, I'm often asked to prove it, but of course that's the point, it's ILLEGAL for anyone to actually know how minors actually behave on the internet. I had the good fortune of having built and run massive online communities in an era before COPPA and had the good judgement not to create multiplayer casual games for kids, and to survey lots of parents about what was actually going on. *We had our customer service people do it as part of support calls. #1 support call? 8-12 year old's boosting Mom's credit card to buy online games. We live in a world full of companies, politicians and media outlets who profit from the controversy generated by lots of minors trolling us online as adults. What's really funny about this PBS documentary is that they're acting like they tracked down a Charles Manson cult, but this is EVERYONE's kids online.

Failing to wholly and unequivocally condemn harassment, hate speech and abuse allows those exact things to continue to flourish and become normalized - with your space as an incubator for its growth. What can you do? Remember “ally” is a verb, not an IG caption. Be a social steward for those in your community targeted by hate. They still have to operate as normal, through the madness. Be their sword and shield, online and in person, so they don’t have to navigate this alone. What can brands do? Do Not Be Silent. When you say nothing, it tells marginalized people you're actually not the safe space you said you were 4 years ago. All the while emboldening the instigators, communicating that they will have free reign to perpetuate abuse unchecked in your spaces. To everyone affected: Screenshot + Block. Taking small steps to reduce the amount of troll/anonymous accounts using your comments section as a hate factory will help keep it used for what it should be: to connect to your true audience. But screenshot first – #GamerGate 1.0 was eventually met with its trolls being sued for libel and slander – arm up as needed for round 2. https://lnkd.in/ewvtnRS9 #gamingindustry #gamingcommunity #gamingmarketing

You won’t see me here on LinkedIn today, on Tuesday 26th of March – or any other Tuesday in the near future. I, and many other users, are boycotting this platform’s #censorship and constraints of #freedomofexpression around the violent occupation in Palestine. 🇵🇸🍉 Countless advocates for ending this genocide have been ousted, restricted and #shadowbanned, including myself, for nothing more than telling the #truth. LinkedIn is targeting anyone who speaks truth to power about this inhumanity. The negative publicity they are attracting with this policy arguably outweighs benefits generated by leaving open space to propaganda. This stance does not even make business sense, as it tarnishes their corporate reputation. It’s got to stop. Immediately. We request that those users be returned to the platform and not harassed, restricted or down prioritized in the algorithm. All have followed community guidelines and have been unfairly targeted. I know this also from personal experience, for which I have factual evidence. A professional social media platform cannot promote censorship, it goes against their professional ethos and reputation. #NoLinkedInTuesday

Social media helps us connect but it can also deceive. You’ve probably heard of someone tricked by a fake friend request into giving money. Violent and pro-terror content shouldn't be left to fester and spread on social media. When online content is leading to acts of violence in the real world, we need to take action and urge social media platforms to stop this harmful content. Our data showed that Meta platforms experienced a 193% increase in Jew-hatred following October 7. This is why we applaud Meta's decision to strengthen enforcement during the Israel-H@mas war, and why we strongly disagree with Senator Elizabeth Warren's recent call to relax enforcement policies and allow potentially pro-terror and incitement to hate content to remain online.
