I'm delighted to share that Horse Island Research Station, located on the Thimble Islands in Connecticut, received an AIA CT 2023 Design Award. Client: Yale Peabody Museum Firms: GOA Architecture, Jig Design Build The intended use of the station is to serve as a base for scientific exploration and facilitate the research of Long Island Sound's estuarial waters. The compact 850 sq. ft. structure features a spacious multipurpose area that can be utilized as a classroom or event space, opening to the outdoors on both sides through sliding doors. For overnight stays, the building offers two sleeping alcoves and a compact kitchen. To support its fully off-the-grid location, the station is equipped with solar panels and a composting toilet. The most exciting aspect of this project to me was the way that we adjusted existing design processes to account for regenerative design principles, including prefabrication, design for disassembly, energy production, local supply chains, water collection, and ecology. One of the most challenging yet innovative parts of the project was the design and construction of the four roof "barnacles." These polyhedral volumes not only serve as large skylights and wind scoops for natural ventilation but were also strategically designed to optimize the solar angle for the solar thermal and photovoltaic panels installed on two of their sides. This design-build project provided a unique opportunity for me to contribute not only during the design and construction phases, but also during the initial research phase, where I wrote a White Paper detailing various passive design strategies for the project.
