WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY: Today (October 10th) is World Mental Health Day. Mental health is a universal human right. World Mental Health Day 2023 is an opportunity for people and communities to unite behind the theme 'Mental health is a universal human right” to improve knowledge, raise awareness and drive actions that promote and protect everyone's mental health as a universal human right. World Mental Health Day is a day to talk about mental health and show everyone that mental health matters. It’s also a day to let people know that it’s okay to ask for help, no matter what you’re going through. Around 1 in 6 adults in the UK are experiencing depression. Women are twice as likely to experience depression than men. 15% of women receive treatment for depression, compared to only 9% of men (Mental Health Foundation). In support of World Mental Health Day I would like to give back. Here are 2 ways I am doing this: 1. We need to acknowledge the importance of mental well-being. We must replace judgement with empathy, understanding and offer support to those who are struggling silently. It's time we acknowledge that mental health is a universal right. People suffer silently, fearing judgment and stigma. It's time to change that. In 2022, the World Health Organization reported that 15% of working-age adults live with a mental disorder. That's a significant number. Yet, many still hesitate to bring up their mental health struggles due to the lack of awareness and support. Why is Mental Health a Universal Right? 👉 Everyone Struggles - This can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender and socio-economic background. 👉Promoting Productivity - When there is access to necessary support and treatment, increases productivity and happiness in both personal and professional spheres. 👉Reducing the burden on healthcare systems - Proactive approaches to mental health can prevent symptoms from escalating into severe conditions. 👉Preventing Social Isolation - Ignoring mental health can result in social isolation. HAPPY MENTAL HEALTH DAY EVERYONE!! 🌅🎉 This year's theme is quite unique but most consequential, a call for 'Universal right to mental health', a call most needed in a world of increasing stress and decreasing well being.  We at Paakhi strongly advocate for mental health to become a basic right for each being! You ask why mental health is important, well it's your mental health that's the base for your overall health. A precursor to most physical issues stems from a stressed mind and body, a reluctant and ignorant approach to not act on how our body reacts to stress. Our mental health affects our relationship, our ability to enjoy life and it's beautiful offerings. It prevents us from achieving our potential, our dreams and our aspirations. If that's not enough it also affects our dear loved ones. Burdening them with something they aren't able to help us with. But it's not just our social and emotional being that is affected, studies show that mental health issues affect how on a macro level our society suffers both economically and on social parameters. So when we call for 'Universal right on mental health', we call for a start towards the elimination of ignorance and emergence of awareness. I was inspired to see how dedicated people are, for the unseen and intangible: mental health. The rarely discussed, tabooed area of human existence has been relentlessly dealt with by these dedicated people, a percent of which graced us by being present at the First Indian Mental Health Submit. This first thoughtful step taken by psychologist Pritha Saha and her team should be celebrated across. It's time that we normalize the conversation around mental health, un-tabooing the endlessly tabooed and more. 🧠 Mental Health Stigma: Mental health stigma varies across cultures and communities. By talking openly, we can challenge these stigmas and encourage more people to seek help. Small steps can lead to big changes:  🌟  Talk About Mental Health: Open conversations can reduce stigma and encourage others to share their struggles and seek help. 🌟  Use Tools for Mind Health: Apps, books, and other resources can provide valuable support and coping strategies. 🌟 Normalize Taking Medication: Just like we take medicine for physical illnesses, it's okay to take medication for mental health. It's a step towards healing. 🌟 Approach a Therapist: Therapy can provide a safe space to explore our thoughts and feelings. Normalizing this step can encourage more people to seek professional help. 🌟 Identify When to Visit the Doctor: Recognizing the signs that indicate professional help is needed is crucial. 🌟 World Mental Health Day: Breaking the Silence 🌟 Today, on #WorldMentalHealthDay, I'd like to take a moment to reflect on the importance of mental health, the stigma that surrounds it, and the significance of seeking help. Mental health quietly affects us all, directly or indirectly. In Switzerland and the UK, millions of individuals silently battle mental health issues daily, with statistics revealing the profound impact on our communities.   🇨🇭 Switzerland: Over 20% of the population experiences mental health issues. 🇬🇧 UK: Approximately 1 in 4 people face mental health challenges. However, It's more than just numbers; it's our colleagues, our friends, our family, and even ourselves. I, like many others, struggled in silence- devastated by the loss of a family member. I didn't speak about my pain, and I neglected my own mental health. But, thanks to somebody very special to me, my life changed when I was introduced to my therapist – a space where I could be seen and heard but not judged. Working with a therapist allowed me to understand and maintain my mental health better than ever before. It's a journey I wouldn't have embarked on without professional support. However, not everyone is aware of the support available nor of its relevance to their life. Today, I am a stronger advocate than ever for mental health awareness! That's why I'm proud to be part of Sanzu, a platform dedicated to making that first step toward seeking help a little bit easier. If we can reduce the stigma, provide access to support, and empower individuals to prioritise their mental well-being, then we are making a difference. Even in 2024, mental health awareness in Indian society still faces significant challenges. People are often seen joking and tossing around words and terms just like that as a way to cope up with the lack of understanding about the seriousness behind mental health conditions. These jokes give birth to misconceptions and stigma. Despite progress, there's a pervasive belief that mental health issues are a sign of weakness or something to be ashamed of. This stigma can discourage people from seeking help, and the cycle of suffering in silence continues. What I feel is that there exist two sets of people majorly: 1) The ones who are completely unaware of mental health conditions 2) The ones who do know, but their source of information is misconception, stigma in society, and not the true information. There are just a handful of people who are completely aware of mental health issues and the seriousness that lies behind. We often hear statements like, "Ye sab ameero ki bimari hai," "Do din khana mat do, sab theek ho jayega," "Kya hoga therapy se, hamare zamane mein to koi nahi jata tha therapy lene," "Aaj kal ke bacche atrangi bate karte hai bas," "Kaam na karne ka bahane hai sab," "Subah jaldi uthkar daud lagane jaya karo," "It doesn't really exist, it has become a fashion for this generation," "Counsellors sirf baat karne ke paise lete hai," "Busy raho, depression ka time nahi milega," "Kisi ki nazar lag gayi hai shayad" And the list continues on and on... The primary question that emerges amidst all of this is 'WHY ARE WE STILL IN DENIAL ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH?' In today's fast-paced world, prioritizing mental health awareness is paramount. By destigmatizing discussions surrounding mental well-being and fostering supportive communities, we can cultivate environments where individuals feel safe seeking help and support. Let's continue to advocate for mental health awareness and create a world where everyone's emotional well-being is valued and supported.
