Wisdom of Experts: A new approach to authenticating #carbon credits! 🚨In case you missed it. On Friday, the Science Based Targets initiative published a ‘clarification’ to their seismic announcement on Tuesday that they would allow an increased role for carbon credits in achieving emission reductions targets The SBTi clarified that there had been ‘no change’ to their standards, and that any change would have to go through their usual approval process So in other words: ‘nothing to see here!’ But it really begs the question, why publish the statement at all? 🎪 It’s such a circus and poor governance from a body that we all need to succeed! To better align the emissions trajectory of China’s power sector with the country’s neutrality target for 2060, China’s national Emission Trading System (ETS) needs to be enhanced. Hongyu Zhang, Heng Liang, Da Zhang, Junling Huang, and Xiliang Zhang (Tsinghua University) find that introducing auctions into an output-based ETS can reduce emissions with a limited increase in cost and lead to a more diversified technology mix. 🌍 Last week, the Austrian Federal Climate Ministry and Federal Finance Ministry unveiled its national Carbon Management Strategy, reinforcing its position as a European leader in the Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) sector.   The strategy includes several key action points: ➡ Assessing the potential of various permanent removal technologies to generate negative emissions within Austria; ➡ Setting up CDR targets; ➡ Lifting the ban on geological storage; ➡ Evaluating and optimising the use of existing and future financing tools to support the CDR sector.   We congratulate the Austrian ministries on this significant step forward and call on other European countries to develop their own national strategies to support the necessary deployment of permanent CDR 🌱🇦🇹   You can find the Strategy and the accompanying evaluation report on CO2 storage here: bit.ly/3RQ5Dl4

Our annual look at the evolution of US emissions under current policy is out today! While we see emissions continuing to fall, additional policy action is needed to put the US on track to meet its 2030 commitment under the Paris Agreement. We also identify key sources of uncertainty - technical, judicial, and political - that will shape the path ahead.

Carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) provides a public good by removing carbon from the atmosphere. As federal investments into carbon removal grow, there is an opportunity for a federal measurement, reporting and verification (#MRV) function to create oversight and set quality standards for CDR to ensure credible and effective carbon removal. New WRI Climate analysis explores what an #MRV function could look like in the context of U.S. federal policy, including approaches to managing uncertainty, to support high-quality #CarbonRemoval.
