The latest Synthesis report from UN Climate Change sheds light on crucial gaps in setting ambitious, inclusive, and investable Nationally Determined Contributions (#NDCs) under the #ParisAgreement. Key insights include: 46% of Parties provided quantitative estimates of financial support needs. 46% of Parties included quantitative information on financial investment or expenditure to support their NDCs. 34% of Parties highlighted the importance of providing gender-specific (gender-responsive) finance. With the #GlobalStocktake on the horizon, we must ensure that the next round of #NDC updates is not only more ambitious but also inclusive and investment-ready. 📢 Today, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) approved Ursula von der Leyen for a second five-year term as President of the European Commission (EC). 🗳️ MEPs gathered in Plenary session voted in favour by 401 votes, with 284 votes against and 15 abstentions. 👏 Eurosif congratulates Ursula von der Leyen on her reappointment and commends her commitment to follow-up on the objectives and targets of the #EUGreenDeal. 🌱In a speech to the European Parliament (EP) this morning, Ursula von der Leyen highlighted a renewed focus on financing a clean #transition in the EU. 🏢 This included the commitment to enshrine the 90% GHG reduction target by 2040 in the EU Climate Law, as well as a proposal for a Clean Industrial Deal to further channel investments towards industry and infrastructure. 📈 She also underlined that both private and public investments would be necessary to support these objectives. She proposes to establish a European Savings and Investment Union to further mobilise EU citizens’ savings, and the creation of a European Competitiveness Fund to further leverage private and public investments. 🗓️ Next steps: 📌 The New EC President will now constitute the College of 27 EU Commissioners, in collaboration with EU Member States. 📌 Candidates for Commissioner positions will undergo public hearings by the EP, which are expected to start in September. 📌 Once the hearings are finalised, MEPs will vote to confirm the composition of the College of Commissioners. 📌 The next EC leadership is expected to be up-and-running by the end of 2024. 🔗 Find Ursula von der Leyen’s speech to the Plenary here: https://lnkd.in/euz3XyTy

#cop28 #climatepolicy #co2emissions #energypolicy #geopolitics Mission impossible Between 1990 and 2019 CO2 emissions rose from 35 to 53 GtCO2eq. Despite the pandemic and energy crisis, current emission levels have exceeded 54 GtCO2eq. In order to achieve the +2°C global warming target, CO2 emissions in 2030 must not surpass 39 GtCO2eq (-46%). Furthermore, to meet the more rigorous standard set out in the Paris Agreement (+1.5°C relative to the pre-industrial period), the limit drops to 30 GtCO2eq (-55%). The Accord's member nations have committed to reducing emissions #ndcs , but their current commitments suggest that global emissions will range from 48 to 55 GtCO2eq by 2030. Therefore, according to the United Nations' assessment (#un ), global temperatures are expected to increase by approximately 3°C in this century. In the worst-case scenario, emissions responsible for climate change may increase by 5% in 2030, while in the best-case scenario, they may only decrease by 9%. To achieve a favorable reversal in climate, COP28 would need to make extremely vigorous resolutions that are unlikely to be implemented given the current state of economic and geopolitical interests

💭 Here are some of the key messages from the 6th meeting of the Group of high-level specialists on the future of #CohesionPolicy organised by the European Commission (DG REGIO): 👉 Many policies, including the RRF, tend to be highly centralised, aspatial, or spatially-blind. This approach can result in resources not being allocated where they are most needed, leading to increased risk of discontent, people feeling left behind and Euroscepticism. 👉 There is often insufficient coordination between EU policies, leading to inefficiencies and missed opportunities for synergy. 👉 Emphasising performance over absorption is essential, as investing in underdeveloped projects with subpar institutional conditions can erode policy effectiveness and public perception.
