The theme of this year's #DesertificationAndDroughtDay is: “United for Land: Our Legacy. Our Future.” #IPCC's #ClimateChange & Land report, released in 2019 says that ‘land degradation is a serious and widespread problem, yet key uncertainties remain concerning its extent, severity, and linkages to climate change. Land degradation can be avoided, reduced or reversed by implementing sustainable land management, restoration and rehabilitation practices that simultaneously provide many co-benefits, including adaptation to and mitigation of climate change. In the fight against climate change, the connection between land restoration and carbon sequestration is clear – healing the land is synonymous with healing the atmosphere. As we witness the devastating impacts of climate change, investing in large-scale land restoration efforts becomes not just an environmental imperative but a collective responsibility. #environmentawareness #WED2024 #landrestoration #NEMAUG Evelyn Katasi ,Tony Achidria, Barirega Akankwasah, PhD,

Another fine example of good climate change adaptation practice! 💪 C40 is a global network of nearly 100 mayors of major cities fighting climate change, committed to utilising an inclusive, science-based, and collaborative strategy. One of the ways they achieve this is by making communities more flood- and drought-resistant. Their project, Water Safe Cities Accelerator, shows how exploring the valuable insights mayors can bring to shaping international climate policy. 🔎 If you would like to read more about the project’s impact, see: https://lnkd.in/dsbGP_zv #floodstopping #waterrisk #floodrisk #climaterisk #urbanresilience #climatechange #adaptation #UnitedInAction #WaterSafeCities

At their meeting in #Samoa in October 2024, I would urge Commonwealth Heads of Government to commit to a comprehensive and ambitious climate action plan. This plan should include concrete measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance climate resilience, and support vulnerable communities in adapting to the impacts of climate change. By prioritizing collective action on #climate change, Commonwealth leaders can demonstrate global leadership and solidarity in addressing one of the most pressing challenges of our time. #climatchange #EmpowermentforaSustainableFuture: #ActNowforClimate, #HealthandFreedom" #EmpowerSustainAct #Pakistan

Parks Canada has just published a report titled “Carbon dynamics in the forests of national parks in Canada”. It’s the first report in the Parks Canada Carbon Atlas Series and describes the carbon stocks and fluxes in 31 national parks from 1990 to 2020. It helps understand the role of protected areas as nature-based solutions for climate change mitigation. https://lnkd.in/gYmjFUwY
