As someone who has experienced life in different countries, I've come to appreciate the importance of the words we use to describe our journeys and narratives. 💬 The video below serves as a reminder of the importance of a much-needed linguistic shift. Our words shape our thoughts, and it's crucial that we choose language that reflects parity. 🧳 The word "migrant" is more inclusive and acknowledges that we all move across borders for various reasons – be it work, study, family, or seeking a better life. It doesn't carry the implicit connotations of privilege that "expat" sometimes does. 🤝 Let's encourage the use of language that promotes inclusiveness, equality, and unity, and recognize that we're all part of a global community. #MigrantNotExpat #GlobalCitizen #LanguageMatters

Monday may have seemed like just another ordinary day for many, but for millions around the globe, it marked a significant observance - International Migrants Day. On December 18, we commemorate the UN General Assembly's proclamation in 2000, acknowledging the substantial and growing presence of migrants worldwide. In 1990, the Assembly adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. Fast forward to the High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development in 2006, where 132 Member States came together to reaffirm crucial messages. Firstly, they highlighted that international migration, when supported by the right policies, could be a positive force for development in both origin and destination countries. Secondly, the emphasis was placed on the vital importance of respecting the fundamental rights and freedoms of all migrants to fully harness the benefits of international migration. Lastly, the participating states recognized the significance of strengthening international cooperation on migration at bilateral, regional, and global levels. The dialogue acknowledged that while international migration could contribute to development, it was not a substitute for it. Often, individuals are compelled to seek opportunities abroad due to poverty, conflict, or human rights violations. Addressing these root causes, including fostering peace, security, good governance, and decent work, is essential to ensure that migration becomes a matter of choice rather than necessity. Let's collectively integrate international migration into our development agendas and national strategies. By doing so, we pave the way for a world where migration becomes a positive force, empowering individuals and contributing to the prosperity of nations. #InternationalMigrantsDay #MigrationForDevelopment #GlobalUnity #diversityequityandinclusion

International Migrants Day December 18 #Government_of_Canada #Immigration_Refugees_and_Citizenship_Canada As the world is becoming increasingly complex and dangerous, the way people are moving across borders is changing rapidly. The climate crisis and increasing global conflict have compelled millions of people to leave their homes. Many migrants, who are already fleeing dangerous and vulnerable situations in their home countries, face threats to their well-being – including smuggling, human trafficking, violence and even death. International Migrants Day is a time to acknowledge the reality of these dangers and to reaffirm our commitment to support migrants, and uphold their human rights and dignity. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the many contributions that migrants make to their home and host countries. Today, on International Migrants Day, we invite all Canadians to join us to express our solidarity with migrants by recognizing their human rights and dignity as they move across borders, celebrating the invaluable social and economic contributions they make to our society each and every day, and recognizing their courage and resiliency in the face of great hardship.

WOULD YOU VOLUNTARILY MAKE THIS TRIP WITH YOUR FAMILY? It is pretty easy to deride asylum seekers for illegally entering the United States, especially as we sit in our easy chairs, watch our TVs, and eat the food we had delivered or bought at our well-stocked local grocery. It's always easy to be superior when we don't have to walk in the shoes of those we condemn. Before I condemn asylum seekers/"illegal" (undocumented) migrants, I always ask myself, "Exactly what job did I want that I didn't get because a migrant got it instead?" In all my years (and there are a lot of them behind me), I cannot identify a single job that I wanted that I didn't get because it was given to a migrant. Consequently, when I hear someone make that argument, I ask them, "Exactly what job did you want that you didn't get because a migrant got it instead?" No one I have asked has ever been able to identify a job. Perhaps the problem is not that migrants are entering America illegally but that America, once a friendly haven for our immigrant family members, has become an unfriendly place. Perhaps we need to change our outlook. We complain we are sending jobs Americans should have to China and other countries and need to bring them home, but how can we do that if we do not have the workers to fill those jobs? And to answer my original question, no, I would not voluntarily make this trip with my family! https://lnkd.in/eMbQwUjm
