Canada’s next big start-up success story is out there. But are large Canadian businesses doing enough to bring that story to life? Our country isn’t short on ambition, talent, or ideas, but new findings from Deloitte Ventures and BDC Capital suggest that large organisations aren’t adequately stepping up to invest in our country’s innovation economy. As a result, corporate venture capital (CVC) arms outside of Canada are stepping in to try and fill the gap – but without sufficient investment, our start-ups simply aren’t able to grow and contribute to our economy. Furthermore, our report found that Canadian CVC arms are more likely to invest in companies abroad. It's clear that large Canadian businesses can do more. Our report found that just 6% of Canadian public companies that generate over $1B annually are making direct venture capital investments into companies. In the U.S. this rate is nearly six times higher, at 40%. We can and must have a greater say in our innovation ecosystem. Following the recent release of the 2024 Federal Budget, our country’s future prosperity is in the spotlight. We know that more needs to be done, and this also means that business leaders need to step up to the plate and invest in the Canada we want – a country where tenacity and courage are rewarded, not overlooked. A more competitive, prosperous Canada is within reach. To learn more about how we can get there together, read our exclusive report on Corporate Venture Capital in Canada: https://deloi.tt/3WBfy1g #DeloitteVentures #CVC #CanadianInnovation #StartupEcosystem #EconomicGrowth #VentureCapital #VC

Entrepreneurship can be elitist Every funding partner (Angels, VC's, Gov't programs, etc.) wants other partners at the table to help fund a new start-up. No one wants to take the risk and fund them solo. It's risk mitigation, I get that.... But as this report from Entrevestor.com points out: If you don't run in the right circles how do you even know who the angel investors are? "He said unstructured angel financing tends to favor privilege because the founders that can attract capital tend to be those with the best connections" That's one thing that always bothered me: If non-dilutive funding partners are only able to fund a certain % of costs (Ex: 80% of a salary), and then the local VC requires some sort of matching investment (Ex: Angels), but the entrepreneur doesn't have the network to find the angels, Then what happens next? Nothing. And, that might just be the problem....

What is the SA Startup Act Movement and What is our Position Paper is About? 🚀 The SA Startup Act Movement is a collective of ecosystem players whos initiative is aimed at creating a more favorable environment for startups in South Africa. We seek to implement specific policies and reforms that will foster the growth and sustainability of new business ventures, ultimately contributing to the nation’s economic development. Startup Visa Program: Attracting international talent and investors to enrich South Africa’s entrepreneurial landscape. Relaxation of Exchange Control Limitations: Facilitating smoother financial operations and encouraging foreign investment.
