ABSTRACT :"Surfing is a cultural ecosystem service, providing recreational benefits to over 50 million people worldwide and fostering economic activity through retail and tourism industries. Despite its growing popularity and threats to natural environments, surfing’s economic and social impacts remain sparsely documented. This study provides a nationwide assessment of surfing’s impact on Australia’s economy and participants’ wellbeing, using an online survey of Australian surfers (n=569). Domestic surf-related expenditure was estimated at A$3719 per surfer per year, including retail (A$1858) and travel (A$1861). Heterogeneity analyses reveal differences in expenditure patterns across regions, age groups and modalities of engagement in the sport. Aggregating across a population of 727,328 Australian adult surfers, the direct input into the market economy is estimated at A$2.71 billion per year. Standardized wellbeing measures indicate that over 80 % of participants experience positive effects from surfing, particularly in community connectedness, physical, and mental health. However, major concerns exist regarding the sustainability of surfing environments due to erosion and overcrowding pressures. Following the SEEA EA’s ‘logic chain’ framework, this study provides a set of baseline results that may be inputted into accounting processes considering recreational ecosystems services. Further, the systematic approach used in this study could be replicated by comparative analyses across time and other prominent surf regions. In my 25 years in Portugal's surf industry, I see a significant opportunity for municipal councils to enhance the positive impact on local communities. Collaboration between surf businesses and educational institutions is crucial. Establishing training programs can equip the local workforce for the industry's diverse needs. Streamlining bureaucratic processes, simplifying regulations, and supporting international talent, including AI developers and photographers, will enrich the industry and boost global competitiveness. Sustainability must be a priority. Encouraging eco-friendly practices within the surf industry aligns with the global emphasis on environmental responsibility, reinforcing Portugal's image as a conscientious surfing destination. City councils should actively support marketing, events, and diverse activities like yoga retreats and cultural experiences to create a vibrant surf culture, attracting a diverse range of visitors and fostering community. Engaging with stakeholders, including businesses and local communities, is crucial for effective policymaking. Experienced individuals, like yourself, should provide input to align regulations with the practical needs of the surf business. In essence, adopting a proactive, collaborative, and sustainable approach, municipal councils can elevate Portugal's surf industry. We at @OldSurfer understood this when we created #TheOceanConnections, the first digital platform dedicated 100% to connecting change leaders in favor of the oceans, whom we call Green Story-Doers.   This year we’re continuing our efforts, but we've gone much further and, together with Flama Circular, reached the coasts of Mozambique to put circularity into action, demonstrating that rethinking the surfing industry is possible for anyone, anywhere in the world who wants to join the change. 🌍 Supporting Local Businesses: A Call to Conscious Travel 🏄♀️ Last week brought shocking news to the surfing world. Imsouane, one of Morocco's famous coastal towns, is facing demolition. Locals received a 24-hour notice to vacate their houses and businesses before bulldozers rolled in. Despite the fact that some of these structures were built without proper certificates, the 100 years old fishermen houses could potentially become cultural heritage instead of facing destruction. Personally, I've spent many days surfing in Imsouane, getting to know local inhabitants whose homes and shops have been destroyed – friends who guided me around surf spots, introduced me to unique traditions, and truly connected me to the culture. As a conscious traveler, these people and places held more value for me than any fancy resort. These experiences were a part of the magic of surfing in Morocco, enriched by simple moments and authenticity. In today's world, as surfing gains popularity, local communities in many destinations are being displaced and adversely affected by tourism. If we want to maintain balance and preserve the essence of these places, it is crucial to support small local businesses. Empowering these communities is key to preserving the essence of the destination. Therefore, I encourage you: next time you travel, consider booking local. Think about who you support. Choose local businesses; opt for growth over destruction.
