What an extraordinary election! The Cons share of the vote finished on only 23.7%, meaning their vote share has halved in five years. Labour has won a historic landslide and the size of majority means they can be radical, and they must hope that this sees them in power for at least a decade. But the shift of the Conservative vote to Reform speaks volumes. A night of colossal losses as well as wins. The best performance ever for the Lib Dems, the worst ever for the Conservatives and a bruising for the SNP winning only 9 seats. I can't wait to get my sleeves rolled up and persuade the new government to get on with the job of corporate governance reform, making directors accountable, restoring public trust and faith in business and bringing forward measures to make business in the UK accountable for their impact on the environment and society.
This morning we’ve woken up to the seismic shift in UK politics everyone anticipated. Congratulations to the incoming Prime Minister and his team as they assume their seats in the House of Commons and their new roles in the days to come. 🗳 Two weeks ago, we outlined our top five priorities for the new government – from essential audit reform to crucial investment in HMRC. We look forward to working with the new government to make the UK an even better place for businesses to thrive. Well, part of the coalition agreement is allocation of specific cabinet portfolios to each party and same applies to ambassadorial and board appointments. Prime Minister should reserve the right to resuffle and reallocate portfolios if according to his judgement any minister, ambassdor or board member is not performing to the satisfaction of the Prime Minister. Prime Minister's judgment should supercede the provisions of the agreement if it is not in the national interest. You expect performance and productivity, failing which Prime Minister may remove the minister in question. No agreement should be binding when it comes to performance.
