In this article, BBC News breaks down the progress that the UK is making in its pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. Some of the key takeaways include: ↘ Since 1990, the UK's carbon emissions from electricity generation have fallen by around three-quarters. 🌞 The proportion of electricity generated by renewables - such as wind and solar - has grown to around 40%. 👎 Despite the push for renewable energy, the government announced that it was granting 100 oil and gas production licenses for the North Sea. 🚗 Electric car sales have been faring relatively well, according to the CCC. In 2023, 16.5% of new car sales were of vehicles with electric batteries - up from less than 2% in 2019. The article also discussed heat pumps, forestation, agriculture, transport and carbon capture and storage. Renewable energy takes centre stage as the new UK Labour government, steered by Chancellor Rachel Reeves, commits to a breakthrough in England's energy strategy. The lifting of the de-facto ban on onshore wind farms marks a pivotal shift in our nation's approach to sustainable energy. Today, the Chancellor paints a new future, one where economic growth is not just a hope but a 'national to-do list', a collective mission we're all now a part of. As we bid farewell to a period of 'chaos and irresponsibility', the winds of change are upon us, ushering in an era where the growth of our economy goes hand-in-hand with the health of our planet. #RenewableEnergy #OnshoreWind #SustainableGrowth #UKRenewables

A positive story to kick-start the year as the use of fossil fuels in 2023 reached a 66-year low! 📉 Over the last 12 months, the amount of UK electricity generated from fossil fuels fell by 22% year-on-year according to CarbonBrief, the lowest it’s been since 1957. Usage levels peaked in 2008 and have been dropping ever since then, but the rapid decline in recent years has been thanks to a vast expansion of renewable energy sources (up six-fold since ’08) and a decrease in demand (down 21% from the peak). This can’t be seen as anything other than a positive, but work is still to be done. Currently, 33% of UK electricity is powered by fossil fuels (31% gas, <1% oil, >1% gas), which means there still needs to be some bigger increases in renewable energy if the government is to meet its goal of a full decarbonised grid by 2035. Helping reduce the funding of fossil fuels is our passion at MotherTree; we work closely with businesses to help them understand how they can save money and reduce their financial carbon footprint. UK Companies Criticized for Lack of Progress on Scope 2 Emissions A new report from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) suggests that companies in the UK need to take more ambitious action to reduce scope 2 emissions from purchased electricity. Scope 2 covers indirect greenhouse gas emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating and cooling consumed by a company. While many firms have made progress lowering scope 1 direct emissions from owned or controlled sources, scope 2 remains largely overlooked. The ECIU analysis found the 120 largest companies on the London Stock Exchange reduced their combined scope 1 emissions by 22% between 2016 and 2020. However, their total scope 2 emissions decreased by just 4% over the same period. Critics argue that scope 2 emissions should be easier for companies to reduce, since they mainly require signing contracts for renewable energy. The report urges businesses to switch to clean power and set science-based reduction targets for scope 2 that align with the UK's net zero commitment. According to ECIU's policy director, "Firms have woken up to the risks of unchecked scope 1 emissions...but scope 2 has remained a blind spot. With UK electricity rapidly decarbonizing, procuring clean energy is a no-brainer to cut indirect emissions."

Exciting times ahead for the UK's renewable energy landscape! 🌱💨 The British government is stepping up its game by broadening its flagship Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme. The aim? To spur on investment and bolster the sector amid challenging deployment obstacles. This refresh of the CfD scheme could be a game-changer. Generators involved now benefit from guaranteed prices on their low-carbon electricity over their contract terms. With the new proposals, the scheme will not only focus on price but also reward "non-price" criteria - think sustainable supply chains and innovative advancements. 🌞 We've seen over 26.1 gigawatts of low carbon projects surge forward with CfD's help. But these potential reforms promise more than just megawatts; they're about securing an economically sound and energy-independent Britain. And in light of recent global events, the urgency for a self-sufficient green energy sector has never been clearer. 🇬🇧⚡ Amidst rising inflation and commodity prices, not to mention stiff global competition, the UK's continued efforts to attract investments are crucial for reaching Net Zero by 2050. It's not just about offsetting emissions; it's security, growth, and innovation on a national scale. As we look ahead, the question remains - how can we, as leaders, innovators, and shareholders in our future, further contribute to this promising shift? Your thoughts and insights are more than welcome. Contribute to the ongoing evolution of our green horizon! Let's discuss in the comments down below 💬 #RenewableEnergy #SustainableDevelopment #NetZeroRevolution
