Two upcoming webinars will help journalists produce truthful, accurate journalism about one of the most talked-about issues this election year. "Transgender Coverage: Avoiding rhetoric to deliver meaningful journalism" is the next topic in our Beat Academy series. Set for April 18 and May 2 (both Thursdays at 1 p.m.), these 90-minute sessions strive to advance the quality of reporting and the level of public understanding about what transgender people experience, and the attacks they face from legislation and anti-transgender activists. The first session will include essential information on core research from medical and psycho-social perspectives, including identifying research disputes. We will discuss gender affirming care and learn to use the right vocabulary. Our second session focuses on the legal and legislative landscape, the 2024 election, and how to get into and cover the trans community — best practices, good starting points and common pitfalls. Enrollees can apply for one of three reporting grants of $10,000-$15,000 to explore how the transgender debate has touched lives in their area: https://lnkd.in/eimvepnF Find out more about Beat Academy: https://lnkd.in/eMrUXVy3

The protest at the APC headquarters in Abuja, led by female party members, highlights the internal contradictions and gender dynamics at play within the ruling party. Nigerian political parties lack internal democracy. The demonstrators' demands for greater representation and inclusion underscore the struggles for gender equality in Nigeria's political landscape. Meanwhile, the fact that this protest is happening at the doorstep of the party's leadership raises questions about the sincerity of APC's commitment to gender empowerment. #APC #NigeriaPolitics #GenderAndPolitics #NigeriaProtests #APCInternalCrisis #WomenInPolitics https://lnkd.in/eC7YnW8t

"#The #Transgender #Journalists #Association #Stylebook #and #Coverage #Guide is a tool #reporters, #editors, and other journalists can use #to #improve #news #coverage #of #trans #people and the #stories #that #affect #them. This guide is meant to provide a foundation for covering trans issues with accuracy and nuance, and it addresses many common language and reporting difficulties. But it is by no means comprehensive: The English #lexicon #of #gender, #sex, and #sexuality #is #dynamic and constantly contested, and trans communities are internally diverse."
Pharmacist, LGBTQ+ Health Equity Advocate and Educator. Being the pharmacist my younger self needed to see.
While the Trans Journalists Association's style guide was originally written for news coverage of issues affecting transgender and gender diverse people, I highly recommend it as a resource for academic healthcare professionals as well. It provides best practices on how to respectfully refer to transgender people in your writing and common mistakes to avoid. They even include a guide for creating an inclusive workplace environment for employees who are transitioning! #pharmacy #pharmacist #genderaffirmingcare #transgender #LGBTQ

What do women's football and gender journalism have in common? They have both been underestimated by traditional media. The current World Cup shows that there is a huge audience for women's football, despite years of under-investment and neglect from broadcasters. It's a similar story for coverage of gender inequality, which makes up a miniscule percentage of news stories worldwide, despite affecting 100% of the world's population. This is a parallel I drew on in The Gender Beat's panel at the World News Media Congress in Taipei last month. We were making the case for greater investment in gender journalism to serve audiences that are currently under-served by newsrooms. There is a strong business case for closing the news consumption gender gap, as set out by Luba Kassova in her landmark report on women in media, From Outrage to Opportunity. “By not serving their needs, we’re telling women, female audiences and gender diverse people, that ‘the news is not for you.’ We are making assumptions that are not true. And we’re missing out on audiences." Thanks Lucinda Jordaan for this great article about our panel. https://lnkd.in/eZwYZuSE

It is important to consider the source when information does not make sense.
On Monday, anti-trans groups released the "WPATH" files in an attempt to create a "major scandal." I analyzed the highly editorialized document and found 216 instances of factual errors, misrepresentations, and distortions of "leaked" materials.
