We were dismayed to see in the Progress Report of the SDGs, that Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG16) - aiming to promote peaceful and inclusive societies, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable institutions at all levels - has seen little to no progress since the start of the SDG era in 2015. In fact, justice for all, effective institutions and inclusive global governance have stagnated or regressed. So we looked at #SDG16 through the lens of #democracy in the past 18 months, thanks to our #DemocracyTracker; this is what we found: ⬇️ https://bit.ly/3VUxdyO

Democracy is retreating across the world, and millions are denied the freedoms that they struggled to achieve. If democracy is to be revitalised, we need to bridge this disconnect. This Forum will focus on this challenge – how to imbue our nations with the values of democracy such as integrity, accountability, transparency and inclusiveness of all, majorities and minorities. Democracy can only thrive where these values motivate families and workplaces as well as politics and government. Join us at the Caux Democracy Forum (15 - 19 July) and explore together the unique role we all have in revitalising democracy! My closing 2023 thoughts and then I'm signing off: I love all that is in this interview with Adeso's CEO Degan Ali, but one part that has been speaking to me recently is: "My goal is to see an end to the system that makes the Global South even need development aid or philanthropy. Ultimately, it’s the responsibility of governments to lift people out of poverty – and in the Global South governments are handicapped by so many things, an unjust global trade system, financial system, economic system, political system. These systems were created post WW2 by former colonizers and imperialist governments, and they are inherently unjust. They were not meant to ensure that everybody participates in the world equally." My undergraduate education was not perfect, by any means - there were problematic things abound. However one thing that sticks with me is that the vast majority our international development and public health courses were rooted in discourse around how inequality was manufactured by the Global North, and how aid was then designed to continue to control the Global South, to ultimately further benefit the Global North. I learned to think about complex socio-political and historical contexts, and to be very intentional that our work amplifies local, national, and regional efforts that challenge the fundamental root causes of what holds problems in place. When I went to graduate school for public health this conversation was alarmingly absent (except for John Blevins #favprofever). In so many spaces we are still educating the next generation of leaders (and who is teaching at these universities? 🤨 ) without this fundamental knowledge, and then the sector just tiptoes around the edges of change, perpetuating the same systems. I have so much to unlearn, learn, and listen to - so my note to myself for 2024 is to keep digging into the roots of what will "see an end to the system that makes the Global South even need development aid or philanthropy".
"We live in a post-colonial world which hasn’t been fully decolonized, so when we talk about shifting the power, we can’t stay completely separate from the geo-politics. Ignoring the politics is part of the problem of perpetuating it. We should be leaning into it. This is why I talk about decolonization – the phrase ‘shift the power’ isn’t strong enough." Read Degan Ali's interview on why #Decolonization is more powerful than #ShiftThePower - and importantly - what is Adeso doing about it. https://rb.gy/3g7j6i

Decolonisation! Decolonisation involves identifying colonial systems, structures and relationships, and working to challenge those systems. As a response 10 International Voluntary Service Organisations who together have engaged in a 2,5 year process to better understand the power dynamics and obstacles that are at stake when organising International Voluntary Service projects. Decolonisation for us is not just a term; it's a commitment to dismantle systemic injustices, reclaim cultural narratives, and restore dignity where it's been lost. Get ready for equality and join us on a transformative journey to understand how we can all contribute to this crucial cause. Check out our website https://lnkd.in/eFNWJPQe #DecoloniseIVS

Sept. 15 - On #InternationalDayofDemocracy 2023, I call on leaders at all levels to take actions that will deepen citizens' trust and ensure more youth participation in governance. This year’s theme — “Empowering the Next Generation”, is a call to action on governments across our nations and other stakeholders to accommodate more young people in governments and make more investments in the youth who are critical stakeholders in our democracy. ----- #IDD2023 #Democracy #socialscience #citizens
