Mapping the cost of non-Europe: Europe could uphold citizens’ rights and equality Equal treatment is a fundamental value of the European Union and all EU citizens should enjoy the same EU rights. However, we could do more to protect citizens' rights and generate benefits for society. The European Parliament called for more EU action to better protect our fundamental rights. One of the most promising would be tackling gender inequality in the labour market. Our study ‘Ten ways that Europe could do more for you - Mapping the cost of non-Europe’ assesses the potential benefits of more EU action through key policy proposals. These benefits reflect economic gains, as well as gains in terms of social and fundamental rights, and also protection of the environment. This year's Human Rights Day marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and prompts us to reflect on equality and equity. At Harmony Alliance, we acknowledge the Declaration's principles while recognising the vital distinction between equality and equity, crucial in our mission to empower migrant and refugee women. Equality, as outlined in the Declaration, asserts that all individuals have the same inherent value and rights emphasising equal treatment, respect, and opportunities for everyone—a principle upheld by laws. However, equity acknowledges that we begin from different starting points and navigate the world uniquely. Our diverse backgrounds and experiences necessitate tailored approaches for a fair and just society. We believe in recognising individual needs and community nuances to achieve equity. Just like providing different ladders to pick mangoes - while equality might offer the same ladder, equity understands that diverse individuals require varied means to reach the same goal safely and effectively. Harmony Alliance's mission is focused on building and creating equity. We advocate for policies that acknowledge and address the diverse needs of migrant and refugee women. Our goal is to create an inclusive environment where everyone can access opportunities and rights, considering their unique circumstances. On this Human Rights Day, commemorating the Declaration's legacy, we reaffirm our commitment to advocating for equity, ensuring that every individual—irrespective of background—has the chance to live safely, healthily, and equally. On the 10th of December is World Human Rights Day. What is it all about and why is it significant? Human Rights Day is celebrated every year on December 10 to commemorate the day in 1948 when the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was ratified by the UN General Assembly. On this important day, the world is reminded of the fundamental freedoms and rights to which every human being is entitled, regardless of their nationality, ethnicity, religion or any other distinction. The rights of all Humans are Same. Human Rights Day was formally established in 1950 when the Assembly adopted resolution 217 A (III) , which called upon all States and interested organizations to observe 10 December that year as Human Rights Day. The theme for Human Rights Day 2023 is "Freedom, Equality and Justice for All". In the decades since the ratification of the UDHR, human rights have become more widely recognised and protected around the world. The declaration has served as the cornerstone for a system of human rights protection that is growing and reaching out to more vulnerable populations, including migrants, indigenous peoples and persons with disabilities. So, apparently we have a day for human rights, but do we really have human rights in this world? A day is observed, specified or whatever they wish to call it, HOW ARE HUMAN RIGHTS TODAY? A Quick look around the world and it is easily noticed that there are the following:- Refugees crisis, occupation, illegal weapons, poverty, murders, wars, gender gaps, political prisoners, racism … and the list goes on. But let us not be pessimistic, we have a human rights day! So what is the purpose of announcing the human rights day while it is violated daily and all over the world? I can only see it as a reminder that we still need to work hard to guarantee everyone's right to have a decent life. Thanks UN for the reminder… #humanrights #humanrightslaw #unitednations #lawstudent #legalknowledge
