Yesterday's first #SEC4BLUEconomy conference marks the end of a series of interesting and meaningful conferences. This is a format of real value to advance sustainable technologies and holistic approaches to maritime security in the BLUEconomy. Besides remarkable remarks by Christos Theophilou from #DGMARE, who summarised that maritime security includes the protection of #citizens working and travelling at sea, and the call by George Xiradakis, President of the Association of #Banking & #Financial #Executives of #Hellenic #Shipping, to include the #finance sector in maritime security considerations, #cruiseships of Celestyal were seen as a good example of cooperation in the field of security, research and development. Philippe HERMES emphasises that maritime security is not just about protecting ships and preserving freedom of navigation but is essentially about ensuring legal integrity and thus upholding legal principles as such. He initiated #BLUSecurity to combine strong institutions #SDG16 with #BLUEconomy #SDG14 and the obligations of flag states under #UNCLOS. IMO Updates "Navigating the future: safety first!" sounds like a relevant and important theme for the International Maritime Organization's 2024 World Maritime Day. Safety is a crucial aspect of maritime operations, and emphasizing its significance is vital for the well-being of crew members, passengers, and the environment. The theme highlights the commitment to ensuring safe navigation and operations in the ever-evolving maritime industry. The celebration of World Maritime Day on September 26, 2024, will provide a platform for discussions, events, and initiatives that promote maritime safety and drive positive changes within the industry. An archipelagic state’s maritime domain would be greater than its land mass, its seaward horizon farther than its terrestrial boundaries. Its seabed resources are more plentiful than its land’s deposits. It is afforded numerous endowments and opportunities by its maritime domain. These are advantages too good to disregard or pass up. A maritime nation cannot reach its full potential or enjoy its maritime blessings if its people do not appreciate and know the importance of the maritime nature of the country. They are unable to see the value of having a robust and responsive maritime strategy. They might cede or lose by default their maritime heritage and resources to other countries that are more aware and interested with the bounties of the oceans. It is therefore in the highest interest of the archipelagic state that its officials and opinion-makers take the lead in awakening and fostering a maritime spirit among the people. Consequently, an effective maritime strategy needs to be formulated to take full advantage (in a sustainable way) of the maritime configuration of the country. Government, business and non-government entities and the public must work together under an able leadership. Defense should be in the form of joint cooperation among the armed services and not merely naval in nature. If mindsets are not attuned to the ‘maritimeness’ of a country, great opportunities to truly provide for the needs of the country and its citizens, would be wastefully missed or needlessly forfeited. - Reflections of an Old Salt

In our East-West #maritime corridors, we have seen a modest 5% — 32 out of 665 — opt for blank sailings from weeks 33 to 37. 50% from the #Transpacific Eastbound, 19% across Asia-Europe & Med, and 31% on the #Transatlantic Westbound. But the spirit of resilience is evident. A commendable 95% of vessels are set to continue their journeys over the next five weeks. And the #2M Alliance are setting a stellar example with a 98% rate. That is progress we can believe in.

The NATO summit seems to have led to a lot of glib and superficial bandying about the 2 percent of GDP target - instead of making a deeper dive into the specific capabilities relevant to Canada in 2023. Here is one we already know about…the upcoming US deployment of next generation continental missile defence is another. Sorry to be sceptical but experience with three defence policy reviews under three different governments is that they produce lowest common denominator mushy compromise among the branches of the CF and they turn out to be poor predictors of actual investment decisions. Perhaps this one will be different… (July 18 update: I yield to the spirited defence by the Martinites of the 2005 defence policy review that it was ambitious - let’s now see how the 2023 review turns out, what Budget 2024 says. I stick by my main point that it would be more useful to talk about specific capabilities and mission sets than the 2 percent target)
