Carbon capture is quickly maturing into a key element on the fight against global warming. And as technology continues to advance at such a high pace, it requires a much more aggressive strategy and leaders with an appetite for risk to navigate this ever changing landscape. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) How far will we go to propel an industry we need to phase out? The $2B investment will be 100% paid over time by public funds (Canadian Growth Fund = Public Sector Pension Investment), tax credits, and grants. It looks like Strathcona bears zero financial risk. $2B to capture 2m tonnes of CO2 per year or 0.3% of Canada's emissions. $2B we could invest in solar, wind, storage, EV, heat pumps…

https://lnkd.in/ec_PWtj5 It looks like government grants or tax credits has helped Shell to invest in inefficient and expensive CCS in Canada. Earlier this spring, Edmonton-based Capital Power Corp. cancelled plans for its proposed $2.4-billion carbon capture and storage project at its Genesee natural gas-fired power plant. Capital Power said while the project was technically feasible, the economics didn't work. It is much better not to produce that CO2 emissions in the first place. CCS may promote business as usual without significant benefits to the environment but huge costs to the taxpayers. #ccs #shell #Canada #CO2

Oil and gas producer Strathcona Resources Ltd. has announced a unique oilsands carbon-capture deal with the Canada Growth Fund (CGF) worth up to $2 billion, which will result in the carbon being captured and stored at its production sites. Calgary-based Strathcona and public investment vehicle CGF will both invest up to $1 billion into Strathcona's steam-assisted gravity drainage oil sands facilities in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Strathcona will build, own and operate the carbon capture and storage (CCS) infrastructure. The CCS equipment will put a large dent into Strathcona’s CO2 emissions, the company says. The project to be developed in partnership with CGF is projected to capture up to two million tonnes of CO2 per year; Strathcona currently produces approximately three million tonnes of CO2 per year from its oil production. #carboncapture #CCS #carbon #oilandgas https://lnkd.in/e9A_fcZk

What do you think about the Pathways Alliance? This week more details were announced on their plan to achieve net zero commitments. Representing six of the largest Canadian energy companies, the group reiterated their target to begin Carbon capture and storage operations in the oil sands by 2030. But how feasible is this timeline? The alliance’s president described it as “zero wiggle room” - requiring fast regulatory approvals, lots of highly skilled labor, and no supply chain disruptions. The recently announced federal CCS investment tax credits and Alberta’s CCS grant program help bring some certainty to the investments and keep momentum going, which is very needed especially considering the $24 billion price tag for currently planned net zero oilsands projects. But there’s still much more to do - particularly keeping costs down and de-risking schedules (ask me about how some partners are doing this). Yesterday, Gibson Energy announced that it has received a carbon price backstop contract for its landfill waste to energy and carbon capture and storage (CCS) project through the Canada Growth Fund (CGF). The commitment is for 200,000 tpa of carbon credits at $85/tonne for 15 years, very similar to the first CGF contract with Entropy Inc last December, 185,000 tpa at $86.50/tonne for 15 years.
