🚂📅 On this day in 1906, the Hepburn Act was passed, empowering the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) to regulate railroad rates! 📜⚖️
The Hepburn Act was a landmark piece of legislation that gave the ICC the authority to set maximum railroad rates and oversee financial records. This act marked a significant expansion of federal regulatory power over private industry, ensuring fair practices and preventing unreasonable rate hikes that harmed consumers and small businesses. 🚆💼
Theodore Roosevelt advocated strongly for the Hepburn Act as part of his Progressive agenda to curb the power of monopolies and protect the public interest. He believed that government oversight was essential to ensure fairness in commerce and to prevent exploitation by powerful railroad companies. Roosevelt's efforts were instrumental in passing this crucial reform, highlighting his commitment to justice and economic fairness. 🌟🏛️
This legislation was a pivotal moment in the regulation of interstate commerce, setting the stage for further reforms and establishing a precedent for government intervention to protect consumers. Let's remember Roosevelt's dedication to ensuring a fair and equitable marketplace!

On Tuesday (31st October) West Lindsey District Council will be in the High Court alongside Braintree District Council. They will be challenging the government's use of emergency legislation allowing the Home Office to impose asylum seeker accommodation centres in local areas bypassing normal planning and consultation procedures.
In this video Cllr Sally Grindrod-Smith explains the situation and their experiences of the Home Office taking charge at RAF Scampton. We've heard similar problems from Wethersfield (Braintree) and have been experiencing them here with respect to Northeye (Bexhill, no decision yet).
Common problems are a lack of information, no consultation, changes in plans and fundamentally...local people don't want these large camps in small communities.
It is VERY CLEAR that the Home Office are not able to work with local communities. This legislation needs to end. The government and the Home Office need to sort out arrivals and processing...rather than introduce a third problem (large scale accommodation centres).
We wish Braintree and West Lindsey all the best. Please show your support...or you could be next!

• Repaving roads, not just filling potholes and getting a commitment from the County to put over one million dollars aside to repave county roads in Hempstead.
• Completion of a comprehensive study of the entire village water and sewer system. The village will be constructing a state of the art water treatment facility in order to provide quality and healthy drinking water to village residents.
• The village has purchased two new fire trucks and ten vehicles for the Department of Public Works.
• Replacing outdated parking meters.
• Addressing the sewer infrastructure in downtown.
• Securing $5 million dollars to assist qualified homeowner in the village to make repairs on such items as roofs.
• Put in place initiatives that reduced crime in the village, making the village safer than ever.
Future aspirations include updating parks and recreational facilities, continue downtown redevelopment to bring young people, healthcare workers, police officers, and such to the village, and increasing the amount of MTA police in the train station area.
Mayor Hobbs announced he will be seeking reelection in 2025, noting, “I’m not about enabling people. I’m about empowering people. More challenges exist, but by working together we can overcome every challenge we face.”

🔊 How a house built on marshland by a 17th century scoundrel gradually became the prime minister’s official residence, and how its cramped, chaotic floorplan still influences how vital decisions are made. Why does tradition trump efficient governance? How do wily advisers exploit the layout to increase their influence over the PM? Is the door more important than the rest of the house put together? And is it finally time to say goodbye to Number 10?

There are few better symbols for the #bipartisaninfrastructurelaw than the Brent Spence Bridge. This bridge, which carries 3% of the nation’s GDP annually, was built in 1963 and designed to carry 80,000 vehicles a day. Today it carries 160,000 vehicles a day and is in urgent need of expansion and repair.
Thanks to the Bipartisan #Infrastructure Law, the dream of decades is becoming a reality.
While we often say there are no Republican bridges or Democratic roads, it was an honor to speak with Democratic Governor of Kentucky Andy Beshear and Republican Governor of Ohio Mike DeWine about the importance of this bridge for their states and the nation.
Different political parties. One vision for economic growth and investment. Bipartisan infrastructure.
FHWA Administrator Shailen Bhatt joined Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine at an event in Covington, Kentucky, on July 28 to announce the design build contract award for the Brent Spence Bridge – a major milestone in delivering the project on time and on budget. The 60-year-old bridge is one of the busiest freight routes in the nation and is in a critical need of an update. “President Biden’s Investing In America agenda is moving critically needed projects forward in Kentucky, Ohio, and all across the country that will make travel safer, move goods to market more quickly, and improve the daily lives of countless Americans,” said Administrator Bhatt.
FHWA is proud to partner with Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and Ohio Department of Transportation to make that happen with the help of the #BipartisanInfrastructureLaw funding. #InvestingInAmerica
