Today we celebrate Juneteenth, a powerful reminder of freedom and resilience. Reflecting on this historic day, our CEO Darrell Byers shares his thoughts on the significance of #Juneteenth and the journey towards economic equity: “On Juneteenth, we celebrate not just the end of slavery but the ongoing journey towards true freedom and economic empowerment for all. This pivotal moment in history reminds us of the long road to justice and the importance of continuing the fight for equality. At Interise, we are committed to supporting minority-owned businesses and driving systemic change. Did you know that Black-owned businesses are three times more likely to be denied loans than their white counterparts? Economic disparities like this stem from historical inequities, and we believe in addressing them head-on. Together we can work on building a future of equality and opportunity. By empowering minority entrepreneurs, namely Black-owned businesses, we foster economic growth and resilience in underserved communities. Juneteenth is a powerful reminder that understanding the challenges Black-owned businesses face today requires looking back at our history. Together, we can pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable future, ensuring that freedom and opportunity are realities for everyone.” - Darrell Byers, CEO, Interise In honor of Juneteenth, join us in supporting the vital work of minority-owned businesses. Hello Alice is being sued by American First Legal, an activist group alleging racial discrimination for offering ten $25,000 grants to Black-owned small businesses. Hello Alice Here's why it should matter to you: Today, we are all struggling for access to capital. The requirements for financial institutions to extend credit - lend money - is quite high. I spent the summer talking to 15-20 potential lenders and investors to help one client access capital. So any help we can all get as #smallbusiness owners is important. But time and time again, data shows that women of color entrepreneurs, even in normal economic times, disproportionately get less funding. In 2021, the combined share of Latina and Black women founders’ venture capital was only slightly over 1%. Demographic data shows .64% for Latina and .41% for Black women founders (Source 1). Covid-19 had a disproportionate financial impact on Black owned businesses. Between February and April of 2020, Black business ownership declined more than 40%, the largest drop across any ethnic group (Source 2). This is just a few pieces of evidence that women of color entrepreneurs need additional support not provided by traditional means. How to help: If you are an ally for women of color (WOC) entrepreneurs, back organizations like Hello Alice who support WOC owned businesses, who are not just talking about support, but who are actually providing it. Attend a workshop, attend a Hello Alice event, sponsor a Hello Alice event or teach the Hello Alice community like I did this summer. . #smallbusiness #womeninbusiness #cfo #chieffinancialofficer #outsourcedcfo #womeninbusiness #blackwomeninbusiness #womenbusinessowners #cfo #author . It's no secret that Black women are the fastest-growing entrepreneurs in the United States. Nationally, Black women entrepreneurs own about 2.7 million businesses. We are forward thinkers, creating something special for those around us. With all the greatness coming out of our communities, Black women-owned businesses are still underfunded and lack the financial resources to scale and thrive long-term. Most companies see a rejection rate 3x higher than their white counterparts. The result is dollars allocated to basic expenses rather than growth strategies. The fight to level the playing field is uphill, but Get The Bag is committed to putting our knowledge, relationships, and insights to work to bring awareness to pathways to power-up and get Black women entrepreneurs funded. Check out our most recent impact Report to learn more about our efforts to curate and advocate for our community of sisters!
