This summer has shaped up to be quite a summer of sports. (With the Euros, Copa America, Cricket T20 World Cup & upcoming Olympics) The debut of the first match last week at Copa between defending champions Argentina and Canada also had a #retail connection - the first airing I saw of the Lowe's Companies, Inc.'s commercial featuring its latest brand ambassador Lionel Messi. To be honest, I wasn't quite sure of the connection when Lowe's first announced this partnership a couple of months ago. What does a home improvement chain have in common with a soccer superstar? All at a time where the Home/DIY segment in retail is suffering. ⚽Building on the popularity of the sport in a nation not known for it historically, who also happens to be hosting three global tournaments over the next three years. ⚽Capitalizing on the Copa America buzz through local community outreach in regional Lowe's markets, including soccer clinics and watch parties. The first such watch party in Norcross, Georgia featured another Argentine soccer legend, Mario Kempes live onsite. ⚽Tapping into Messi's trademark excellence and teamwork with the new "assist" ad campaign - which airs in English and Spanish - including extra perks for Lowe's loyalty customers. ⚽Targeting the all-important hispanic market, which also serves as the mutual connection, including a new partnership with Inter Miami FC. A £100 million brand partnership like this rarely happens. I'm talking about Lionel Messi's Inter Miami MLS deal. And by rarely I mean a contract where a player gets: • Equity stake in the player's club. • Revenue from merchandise and ticket sales. • Share of $2.5 billion Apple-MLS broadcasting rights. All because of how much influence GOAT's personal brand has. If you ask me, I couldn't believe Messi's impact after joining Inter Miami—both financially and culturally. The so-called Messi effect, Messi magic is real. Don't take my word for it. Here's a breakdown: Messi drove 110,000 sign-ups to MLS Season subscriptions in Apple TV+ on day of first game. Last night the Toronto Blue Jays unveiled their City Connect jersey which is a collaboration between the MLB and Nike where each MLB team has their own distinct City Connect jersey showing the vibrant culture of their city. As the Toronto Blue Jays prepare for a home stand which will be their City Connect week, the Blue Jays unveiled their new City Connect jersey and fans have mixed reactions about these new jerseys which looks different to their traditional jersey. As a lifelong Toronto Blue Jays fan from 1977, I actually love the new Toronto Blue Jays City Connect jersey which shows Toronto's iconic skyline and reflects the diversity and culture of Toronto on the jersey.
