What is one of the most important things we've learned over the years at ELDI about revitalizing a neighborhood? The first — and most crucial — part is listening to the community and letting them guide the way. In the late 90s, ELDI hosted hundreds of meetings with community members to start forming a plan for the neighborhood. The result of those meetings was East Liberty's first community plan, A Vision for East Liberty. 🌱 Embracing Community Collaboration 🌱 As I reflect on my enriching journey of two years with the KNCHr, I am reminded of the inherent power of collaboration and community. 🤝🏡 From the very beginning, my aspiration to work for the betterment of society led me to the commission. These past two years have been a testament to the profound impact that can be achieved when we join hands with the community. Every step I've taken, every effort I've made, has been driven by a collective vision of building a more just and equitable world. The recent certificate of good performance, presented by the chairperson of the commission, is not just a recognition of individual efforts, but a celebration of the unity and synergy that exist within our team. It's a symbol of the trust and collaboration we've fostered with the community we serve. Moving forward, my commitment to community engagement remains resolute. I am excited to continue working hand in hand with community members, understanding their needs, and co-creating solutions that uplift and empower. Tough work can be fun, complexity brings with it innovation, collaboration is motivating - that's what every day feels like as I sit in a unique position as the AmeriCorps #Bridging and #Democracy Fellow. The work we're advancing in partnership with so many giants is of great consequence, not just for the field of national service but for our country as a whole. I believe when we lean into hard conversations, not with the expectation of 100% agreement or compromise, but of shared understanding through deep empathic listening, we grow. Our pathways towards solutions grow, our capacity to articulate the nuances grows, and our willingness to be "yes / and" leaders also grows. What are civic experiences? Civic experiences are interactions between local governments and their residents. These interactions are many and varied. Residents get permits, attend municipal meetings, participate in recreational programs, book facilities, make payments, and much more. Government staff members process various requests, administer programs, provide public safety, and handle many other tasks that keep the municipality running smoothly. These interactions encapsulate the moments when residents experience their local government, even if they don’t think of such touchpoints as government interactions.
