Upgrading Production Scraps to Advanced Aluminium Alloys We are thrilled to announce the successful completion of the IBAM - Innovation Booster Additive Manufacturing “UPSALA” project, which aims at revolutionizing aluminium upcycling by transforming production scraps into high-quality alloys for Additive Manufacturing. This innovative process significantly reduces energy consumption, carbon footprint, and waste, promoting sustainability in the AM industry. Despite impurities, the recycled alloys achieved competitive mechanical properties and faster processing times. The project will be presented at the next “Innovation Booster – Project Presentations & Funding opportunities” event at ETH Zurich on July 2nd, see: https://lnkd.in/eu4U9RbP A big thank you to our dedicated team, partners, and sponsors (Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory - ETH Zürich, GF Casting Solutions, IBAM - Innovation Booster Additive Manufacturing) for making this possible! 🌍🚗 Last week, Laura Mera from AIMEN Centro Tecnológico presented some of the groundbreaking results of Greenvehicles LEVIS at ICCM23, the world's leading conference on composite materials. 📚 The novel development of resin chemistries is truly a game changer for a range of sectors and applications. This was also seen early last week in Prof. Conchúr Ó Brádaigh's keynote lecture on this very topic. 🚘💡 Especially the automotive sector can benefit from these developments since they enable novel manufacturing routes such as TP-RTM (Thermoplastic Resin Transfer Molding). 📝 TP-RTM exhibits a promising balance of structural properties and cycle times; however, due to the novelty of the manufacturing process a few technological challenges remain for the full deployment of this technology. In her talk Laura addressed some of the main considerations to bear in mind and shared details on the process window adjustment at the lab scale. ✨ If you're interested in learning more, make sure to check out the link below! 👇 https://lnkd.in/eN2t2MGF #GreenvehiclesLEVIS #composite #materials #automotive #manufacturing #innovation #TPRTM #AIMEN #ICCM23 #resinchemistry #gamechanger #technology #researchanddevelopment

We are constantly involved in numerous research projects. Currently, we are researching how bioplastics can be optimized so that they can be used in demanding technical applications such as the high-temperature range in cars. A previous feasibility study has shown that biobased plastics can substitute petro-based plastics in the engine compartment of combustion engines. With the research project "HoT-BRo2 - Bioplastics for High-Temperature Applications", we are now undertaking further targeted material developments and modifications to make thermoplastic bioplastics and biocomposites suitable for use in the high-temperature range across all industry sectors. Under the leadership of the IfBB - Institut für Biokunststoffe und Bioverbundwerkstoffe, a large network of partners is working to improve material formulations to optimize their mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties. An additional focus is on processing procedures, as well as downstream processing techniques such as radiation crosslinking. ZrB2-based UHTCMCs are a novel class of fiber-reinforced ceramic materials used in supersonic applications, which can reach operative temperatures exceeding 1800°C. In this new work by our Antonio Maria Caporale and Alessandro Airoldi from SIAMS Lab, in collaboration with CNR-ISSMC (Faenza, Italy), and published by the prestigious Journal of the European Ceramic Society, an effective analytical and numerical framework is introduced to link the severe pseudo-plasticity presented by the material to the presence of residual thermal stress (RTS) developed during the manufacturing process. This approach allowed to effectively model the softening and the stiffness recovery observed, as well as their temperature dependance 👉 Link to the paper https://lnkd.in/d73b5eUy #DAER #AerospacePoliMi Politecnico di Milano

🆕 In cooperation with the #FraunhoferIMWS, the company Automation Steeg und Hoffmeyer GmbH developed the system🔸F³-Compositor🔸and successfully implemented it in the polymer pilot plant center #FraunhoferPAZ. The innovative approach of the F³-Compositor combines tape depositing and joining of semi-finished products with high reproducibility and material efficiency. If #UDtapes are laid down three-dimensionally #3D in the manufacturing process, many design options are available, especially for lightweight components manufactured in small quantities. 🌐Learn more: https://bit.ly/3F78QG2 📢 The Fraunhofer IMWS will present these technologies as well as other material and component developments at the #Fakuma2023 International Trade Fair for Plastics Processing from October 17 to 21, 2023. The institute will be represented together with POLYKUM e. V. 📍 at booth B2-2108. #weknowhow #materialsinsights #lightweightcomponents #F3compositor
