With the writers and actors strikes impacting scripted content production, uncertainty is now even more widespread in the TV ad market. Major titles have been delayed until next year or later, forcing brands to adjust their TV ad strategy and leading networks to explore alternative programming. However, in a similar situation when production shut down amid the early days of the pandemic, our industry learned that uncertainty can create opportunities for agile #TVadvertisers. In this Adweek article, Tatari’s VP of Media, Vicky Chang, shares strategies for how advertisers can navigate through this challenging marketplace. These include identifying opportunities in the TV scatter market, maintaining incremental budgets to capitalize on last-minute programming changes, and more 👉 https://hubs.ly/Q01Ydptx0 #TVadvertising #WritersStrike #ActorsStrike

Always looking to learn more about the TV industry, I came across this insightful, free virtual work experience put together by Channel 4 and TheTalentPeople / GetMyFirstJob. In the past couple of weeks I completed the course, developing my understanding of the many sides that go into making the TV shows that we love. The task-based modules covered: - Commissioning: putting myself in the shoes of a production company pitching a project, I created a pitch deck for an original idea; - Consumer Insight: I analysed viewings data to make a broadcasting decision; - 4Studio: I selected clips and stills to promote a show on social media; - Legal and Compliance: I reviewed content to ensure it complied with broadcasting law; - Sales: I advised on budget spending for advertising according to audiences’ viewing habits. It was very engaging, I highly recommend it to anyone interested in working in the TV industry! #4Skills #Channel4 #virtualworkexperience #workexperience #tvproduction #broadcasting #commissioning #sales #socialmedia #legalandcompliance #consumerinsights #tvresearch #creativecareers

Recent reports reveal a significant decline in U.S. TV commissions in 2023, signaling the end of the scripted content boom. Ampere Analysis and Luminate highlight a 21% drop in total TV programs, attributing the decrease to a combination of strike action and the original content boom downturn. Ampere predicts a slow recovery in 2024, emphasizing a notable shift in strategy by streaming services. Global streamers, ordering more international shows, contribute to the "internationalization" of the TV industry and the "displacement of Hollywood." The landscape is changing, and industry players must adapt. #TVIndustry #ContentTrends

From THR: Peak #TV has peaked. A pair of reports this week from data crunchers Ampere Analysis and Luminate — confirm what the industry has known for a while Ampere’s report, looking at scripted TV seasons being ordered in the U.S., noted that the volume of U.S. series has nearly halved since 2019. The number of series titles fell to 481 last year, down sharply from the 633 releases in 2022 and 2021 — which Ampere calls the “high watermark” for scripted production, and below even COVID-hit 2020 when there were 510 scripted TV releases in the U.S The report blames a “combination of strike action and a downturn in the original content boom” and notes an “even more precipitous decline” in series orders. “Due to the time lag between series being greenlit and hitting screens,” Ampere notes, “this number is unlikely to rise in 2024" Ampere points to a change in strategy by the streamers as the main cause of the scripted drop-off, noting that #SVOD services released 77 fewer seasons of scripted shows last year, with broadcast networks releasing 55 fewer seasons Ampere said while broadcast releases have been slowly declining for many years now, the sharp drop last year was largely due to the impact of the strikes and sees some hope for a temporary bounce on the broadcast side as stalled 2023 productions get a mid-season start in January and February The report is less optimistic when it comes to the streamers. Ampere notes Netflix cut its releases from 107 in 2022 to just 68 in 2023. Peacock cut its releases by 20 titles, Hulu by 11, Max by nine and #Paramount by four. Amazon , Apple and Disney+ all maintained the number of series they released in 2023 compared with 2022, but only Amazon kept up the number of series it ordered, suggesting 2024 will see a decline in U.S. shows across nearly every major streamer Global streamers ordered up more shows from outside the U.S. last year — 367 international shows compared to 257 domestic — a figure partially driven by the strikes, but which Ampere says represents the “internationalization” of the world’s TV industry and the “displacement of #Hollywood” at its core That may be overstated. A counterargument could be that as global streamers gain market share in international territories, they are simply beginning to produce less like U.S. broadcasters and more like local channels — commissioning more homegrown series — in some countries to accommodate national quota regulations. The average budgets for international series are well below that of U.S. shows, so a simple tally of the number of commissions does not accurately reflect the budget the streamers are allotting to U.S. versus global series. And despite the boom in international streaming commissions, non-U.S. global hits such as Netflix’s Squid Game are still the exception to the rule. Some streamers, like Max, have pulled back from international production in the Nordics, Turkey and Central Europe to focus on their more popular U.S. shows.

📺🎬 The Power of Anti-Heroes in Film and TV 🎬📺 In the world of entertainment, anti-heroes have often been the driving force behind some of the most successful and critically acclaimed TV shows and films. Shows like “Mad Men”, “The Sopranos”, “The Wire”, “Breaking Bad”, "House of Cards", Succession", "Pulp Fiction", "Fight Club", "The Wolf of Wall Street", "The Godfather", "Terminator", "Scarface", and "Unforgiven" has captivated audiences worldwide, not despite their morally complex protagonists, but because of them. Peter Biskind, in his recent critique, points out that the current trend in the streaming industry is leaning towards content that doesn’t offend, leading to a race to the middle. While aiming to attract the largest audience possible, this approach often results in lackluster content that fails to engage viewers in the long run. The success of shows featuring anti-heroes suggests that audiences are drawn to characters who break the rules, who challenge societal norms, and who represent a departure from the traditional hero archetype. These characters, in their moral ambiguity, reflect the complexities of real life, making the stories they inhabit all the more compelling. As we look to the future of entertainment, studios, and streaming platforms must remember the power of the anti-hero. Let’s not sand down the sharp edges of our stories in a bid to appeal to everyone. Instead, let’s embrace the complexity, the controversy, and the radical rule-breaking that anti-heroes bring to the table. It’s time to listen to the creators, trust in their storytelling abilities, and give them the freedom to craft the kind of narratives that truly resonate with audiences. After all, great stories aren’t just about playing it safe - they’re about pushing boundaries, challenging expectations, and daring to be different. In anticipation of the coming year, I am eager to see the progression of my two films centered around the compelling narratives of anti-heroes. Here’s to 2024 - a year of storytelling that dares to delve into the complexities of the anti-hero. #AntiHeroes #Storytelling #Film #Streaming Fortune https://lnkd.in/dz_arkGg

Netflix is the best thing that happened to Europe’s film and TV industry. In the last 3 years, I watched (on #Netflix) more European TV series and films than I had over the entirety of my life before. Prior to Netflix, Europe’s industry was a patchwork of 30 countries speaking 20+ languages producing content for its local markets and selling through local distribution channels. Netflix entered in 2012, and today 70+ million European subscribers can find all TV series and films on one platform and watch in any audio/subtitle combination. Beyond #Europe, European TV shows now have access to a global audience. La Casa de Papel is Netflix’s most-watched non-English content worldwide: its global audience spent 190 mn hours watching the series. The game changing impact on the industry: Film - 30% surge in European film production between 2012 and 2019. (growth was flat before Netflix entered). TV series – An even more impressive 44% hike in titles produced between 2015 and 2019! This is great news for Europe’s 1 million workers in this industry. In Spain, the workforce in this industry doubled from 40,000 to 90,000 between 2015 and 2017. TV series only will generate more than 4 bn euro revenue per year. Netflix has been a game changer for Europe’s film. The only hint of melancholy in this Holywood-ending story: the source of rejuvenation had to come from across the Atlantic. Btw, what's a great European TV series or film you recommend?

There’s been a lot of chatter about the content industry and how we might somehow be past the peak of peak TV, given the need for the streamers to get their financial house in order and reduce spending after the digital land grab of the last few years. The reality is that we don’t need more volume in television episodes. We just need better quality control. Producing less content is fine. There’s more than enough to go round, and plenty more than any of us can ever watch while actually maintaining some form of healthy lifestyle. The big question is whether the streaming services and content studios can use their deep experience and unparalleled access to data to create content that can connect with an audience more readily. If the studios can improve their hit rate from 1 in 10 to 2 in 10, we should see more Successions, True Detectives and The Bears than we can ever dream of. Sure, great creativity requires a gamble every so often, and that means tolerating the occasional miss. But more rigor in decision making means better answers all round, and that’s as good for viewers as it is for Wall Street.

The impact of television on societies: Television has played a major role in bringing about some changes in different societies and in aspects that are not hidden from anyone. Although the role required of television is to bring about changes, television has performed this task positively, except for some negatives. If a comparison is made between television and cinema, the superiority of television over cinema appears clear. It is available in all homes, transmitting a set of knowledge and experiences that have a great impact. If one reviews the new information that television brings to the viewer and how many countries and cultures he has learned about through watching it, this great impact will be noticed, and it is thus an important window to human knowledge. The role of the impact is not limited to Television was introduced only to bring knowledge, but it expanded and brought about many changes in the fields of politics and economics. Television has been able to succeed in raising people's interest in local and global political events and some things that arouse individuals' personal interests, such as financial and economic news, and the weather. If it is accepted that this is a positive effect, there are some negative effects that have cast a shadow on some societies, such as its cultural effects of invasion and dispossession. Cultural, especially on the part of large countries with strength in television production. An example of this is what happened in Canada after American television production dominated the Canadian viewer and attracted him away from local programs. This was able to have a significant impact on the cultural identity of Canadian society. Among the negative aspects as well, I said: The phenomenon of reading for entertainment and to pass the time, and television was able to cause some negative effects, such as increasing crime rates, and transferring some negative cultures to other societies. In the field of family life, television had the effect of creating a gap between members of the same family, by focusing and following the image at the expense of useful dialogue between family members. Children are greatly affected by their viewing of television through their imitation of some violent scenes in films shown on television. Television also occupies the viewer’s senses, which deprives him of imagination, unlike in radio or books, in which the reader imagines the events of the novel, which reduces the possibility of developing the faculties of the mind. In imagination and creativity, continuous watching of television may cause some complications to human health, as many doctors confirm, such as damage resulting from radiation or direct effects on sight. Despite this, television is considered one of the important means that has played a major role in people’s lives.
