In the Blume Ventures 'Compounding series,' Karthik B. Reddy engages in a dialogue with Dinesh Agarwal, the founder of IndiaMART InterMESH Limited, centered around long-term thinking and the creation of sustainable businesses. Listening to the podcast - I could closely relate to what the conversation started with -> 4-5 yrs in the US - the weekend trips, the glamour - it all wears down and you start missing your country, culture and much more! As Karthik puts it, ‘the Swadesh moment’ - many of us felt this strong urge to come back to India after watching SRK’s Swadesh movie!!! I was one of the many who moved back and never looked back :). As a VC, we at Blume Ventures would like to propagate a certain kind of entrepreneurship - and hence stories like Dinesh’s are truly inspiring: Some Key takeaways: Passion: While all the IITians were focussed on automating the western world, Dinesh wanted to enable Indian businesses with technology. He was deeply passionate about solving for India and using the power of the internet. He truly believes, India can flourish if its SMEs do well (there aren’t enough jobs and they can’t go back to fields) On Metrics: In the early years, he only focussed on three metrics -> Revenue, cashflow and paying employees. On PMF: The new avatar of Indiamart started in 2009 -and they hit PMF in 2014 (5 yrs) - It takes that long. In those days, competition was less. Today, it would take a min 6yrs - 3 yrs to hit PMF. 3 yrs to contend with competition and another 6 yrs to focus & scale. On Compounding: Compounding Is about growth in profit. Growth is not just about customer or revenue compounding. Indiamart revenue milestones: Year 1(’96): 6 lakhs I Yr 4 (’99): 1.24 Crs I 2005: 12 Crs I 2011: 100 Crs I 2023 : 1000 Crs Customer compounding: Mini Flywheels kicked in as they kept their ears close to the ground. Based on data, they innovated on product - masked numbers, RFQs, transparent pricing and more. They harvested new ideas each year and kept the flywheel going. On Growth: In the public mkts, 20-30% growth yoy is a given. If one can grow 30%+ then you are a rockstar. Anything below 20% is not good. On Team building: In a knowledge business, people are the main ingredients - there is no factory/ no patent. Important for the founder to propagate the vision. Challenge with millennials is that average time they stay in an Org is 2.5 yrs. At a mid-senior level, Dinesh believes people should stay 5-10 yrs to make an impact. Dinesh believes a good mix of people is important, and managing the mix also equally important. His formula : some stable alpha performers (who think futuristic) + stable betas ( who focus on the present) is a good combination. On learning: As an active angel investor, Dinesh likes being involved in startups and keeps his eyes and ears on the ground - this enables him to keep learning. This knowledge has enabled him to carve out a corpus if $250m at Indiamart for investments/ acquisitions.
