Culture change and mindset shift is needed for sustainable progress on accessibility❣️
Unconscious bias and improving societal understanding and attitudes around disabilities – both visible and hidden – are some of the critical issues holding back progress in building a barrier-free Canada, agreed the panelists at the Policy Talks event hosted last month at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. Moderated by Sunil Johal, CSA Group’s VP for Public Policy, the panel “Securing a Disability Inclusive Future” brought together Canada’s accessibility and disability policy leaders, including Stephanie Cadieux, Canada’s first Chief Accessibility Officer, Sarah McCarthy, Andrea Podruski, and Sherri Torjman. The panelists shared their vision for a barrier-free Canada and the roles different levels of government, businesses, and our educational institutions must play in securing an inclusive future. Email publicpolicy@csagroup.org to get information on future Policy Talks events.

Inclusion of those living with disabilities is essential for fostering a diverse and equitable society. It involves creating environments where everyone, regardless of their abilities, feels valued, respected, and empowered to participate fully in all aspects of life. This can be achieved through various means such as accessible infrastructure, inclusive policies, and supportive attitudes. By embracing inclusion, societies can harness the talents and contributions of all individuals, leading to greater innovation, creativity, and social cohesion. It is not only a matter of social justice but also a fundamental human right to ensure that everyone, regardless of their abilities, has the opportunity to fully participate and thrive in society.
