The 6th January marked my 4 year anniversary of joining the health board. It has made me do a lot of thinking and reflection. When I left the NHS in 2015 I swore I would never return. I was working in an organisation whose values were aligned to mine, but where the values were not delivered on. The lived experience was different to the promise. I saw bad behaviours which were ignored, I saw and experienced bullying regularly. The service delivery was good, the staff and service leaders committed. But this was not the culture overall. When I left I was broken and stripped of my self confidence, sense of ability and worth. It was a big step to return back to the NHS after that. I had kept in touch with many colleagues and knew it was still a difficult landscape and place to be. But I took that risk and it has been quite the ride. I joined an organisation in special measures and with lots of issues. Then there was a global pandemic that affected us all in ways we could never have imagined. In my time I have seen similar behaviours as in the past and I have struggled with the lived values vs the written values. The culture hasn’t always been as it should. But I am in an organisation that is striving to change. There are improvements in performance and there are steps to change the culture. Changes that will make this an organisation that values and develops its staff. There is still a long way to go but every journey starts with a single step and we have taken several steps. There are many challenges ahead. Both as an organisation and personally. There are lots of things happening in my service. Some in my control. Some not. Some challenging behaviours. But lots of progress and lots of space for growth. I look forward to seeing where the next year takes me and what challenges are overcome.

September 10 – 16 is Direct Support Professional Recognition Week – a chance for all of us to thank Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) for their dedicated and important work. At SCE LifeWorks, the majority of our team is made of DSPs in a variety of roles, including Individualized Support Workers, Retirement Services Workers, Job Coaches, Employment Consultants and Project SEARCH Skills Trainers. The daily work of each of these employees is intrinsically linked to the execution of our Mission: supporting people with developmental disabilities to work and participate in the community. In this post, we'll feature one exceptional DSP, Teresa Bailey. Teresa, one of our Individualized Support Workers, was the first recipient of the Ann M. Zebrowski Award this year for her excellent all-around work, particularly for the great connection she has made with the person she supports. We asked Teresa a few questions: SCE LifeWorks: How long have you worked with us? Teresa: As of this October I will have been working at SCE Lifeworks for five Years. SCE LifeWorks: What do you love about your work? Teresa: Some of the things I love about my job are: watching someone reach goals they never thought possible, as well as the ability to do something positive and meaningful and enjoy doing it. SCE LifeWorks: Why is your job important? Teresa: The job that we do is an important one, especially for the individuals we support and their families. It isn't always easy to trust somebody who starts off as being a stranger, so building a relationship is just as important. What I do impacts the individual I support, so I make sure to do it the way I would want someone to do it for me if I ever needed support. SCE LifeWorks: Tell us something about yourself that we might not know. Teresa: One thing people may not know about me is I am going to be a grandma this month.
