Innovative approach for behavioral healthcare solutions for pediatrics implemented with payer-provider partnership. Few strategies noted include the right collaboration and VBC model; partner the health plan’s independent behavioral health practitioners with a MSO; implement the Collaborative Care Model; and provide financial incentives to the providers.

To no one's surprise, healthcare has struggled with gaps in behavioral health solutions, and even more so in pediatric behavioral health. The pandemic has shed light on the urgent need for improved behavioral health support across the board, and we are now seeing some promising new paradigms. However, the gap still remains wide for our pediatric population. Leaving an academic legacy for older adult care, the Biden administration has awarded $206M to geriatrics clinician training programs. Called the Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program, the funds will reach 42 different universities and provider organizations across the country. The payments range from about $2.9 million to $5 million between the different educational groups. With this, programs training primary care physicians, nurse practitioners and other clinicians will be able to integrate geriatrics training—particularly related to Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias—into primary care. By 2033, over 40% of the population will be over 65 years old. This sector of the population represents the highest use of medical services and in most cases, they require specialized care. With 2 out of 3 geriatric fellowship positions going unfilled each year, we will have to be creative and find innovative staffing solutions to serve the healthcare needs of this patient population.
