Going green 🪴 In partnership with Purdue Extension Marion County and Farm Credit Mid-America, IPS is introducing aeroponic towers into schools. Thanks to a Indiana 4-H Foundation grant, the district’s admin building displays the first tower, with plans to expand to Mary Nicholson School 70 and William McKinley School 39.

Elementary teachers, let's grow food with your class. Do you think that you have to be an expert grower to do it? Or maybe you think this will take a lot of hard work and lots of sacrifices? That's not necessarily the case! Do you think you'll have run a lunch-time or after-hours gardening club? Do you think you'll have to coordinate volunteers? Do you think you'll have to stay late and water the garden? Do you think this will take up your summer time off? DO you think you'll need to come in on weekends for planting events with the community? Nope! You need to do none of that! So then who's gonna grow the garden? Good question! and the answer is... YOUR STUDENTS. They are the only ones who should be growing this garden. Otherwise they're not gonna learn. And education should be the main reason for growing a garden at a school. You should dedicate time to growing the garden during your class. How? By connecting it to your curriculum. And for that, you need step-by-step bite-sized growing activity guides, that are all done for you. And you need a coach to help you with your questions. And you get all that and more in the Oasis Teachers Membership. Director - Woodleigh Institute | Systems Leadership | Regenerative Futures | Complex Competencies | ReimaginED Conferences
ReimaginED Fremantle will feature a provocation from Associate Professor Glenn Savage. Read more about his session below. The full conference program is now available https://lnkd.in/gg7tnhzC Register for the conference: https://lnkd.in/gEw-weEK 'When education reform hits the dirt: a reflection on gardening the limits of machine-like thinking.' Associate Professor Glenn Savage As a self-confessed policy nerd and budding permaculturalist, Glenn Savage has been provoking audiences in Australia and globally to think about how lessons from the garden can be applied to school and system level transformation. Rather than the ‘machine-like thinking’ that has dominated education reform in recent decades, Glenn argues that policymakers and school leaders should think and act more like gardeners, seeking to build the ecosystems needed for diverse things to grow and flourish. In this session, Glenn will distil his thinking from the past few years of engaging with school and system leaders to advance a ‘garden-like way of thinking’ about educational change, setting out four principles to take our education systems down more productive pathways. 🌱Compost Consultant at Blue Borage, exploring the theme of circular gardening — how home gardeners live and breathe circular economy principles on a daily basis. 🌏 Biodynamic & 🐝 bee-friendly 🌻
How does reading, writing and maths relate to composting? SO many ways! I’m looking forward to exploring this topic with schools this year, and will be using this ‘before’ photo of an inner city workplace garden as a case study. This three tiered raised bed is 6.6m long. The top tier is 16cm wide The middle tier 11cm The bottom tier 10cm First question — what’s the area, and how many plants can I fit into this space? Next up will be to measure the depth of the planters and calculate how much soil it holds. In reality I don’t usually calculate all of this, I just start planting, and fix the soil as I go. Would this maths exercise inspire some children to later design garden planters, or optimise a space to grow more food? Or is it just helping teachers tick a box? Maybe it helps to budget the right amount of money for plants and soil? I’m keen to hear from any school teachers here on LinkedIn as to how this compost consultant can help tick several boxes at once. #Literacy #Gardening 🌱🌱🌱 Blue Borage: good food for all, grown in healthy soil. Everywhere possible, as soon as possible. www.blueborage.co.nz 🌱🌱🌱

Great work by Western Resource Advocates to help Colorado cities replace turf with water-wise landscaping on public lands. We're making big strides! Residents and commercial owners can get in on the action, too. Urban environments are about 80% privately owned, so we need private participation to increase the speed of adaptation. The tools I'm designing at Rainplan help connect private properties to government funding and our concierge service can help navigate the sometimes confusing process. Plus, we use data to inform policymakers of demand, which helps drive future incentives. Read the article to see what cities are leading the way, and visit Rainplan.com to see what incentives are available in your area! #waterwiselandscaping #climateadaptation #greeninfrastructure #techforgood
City and County of Broomfield are among a growing number of Colorado communities adopting standards that limit the installation of non-functional turfgrass in new development! Thanks to Michael Booth for reporting on this!
