Inclusive Excellence in Higher Education. Diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in online education. Couples and family therapy.
I came across an article this morning by Dr. Gina Ann Garcia. She wrote the book, Becoming Hispanic Serving Institutions: Opportunities for Colleges and Universities. I’m thinking about how powerful it would be for us to broaden how we conceptualize student outcomes by centering liberatory practices. Garcia wrote, “Liberation here is the process whereby minoritized students are educated in colleges and universities that seek first and foremost to disrupt the socio-historical oppression of their students while simultaneously empowering them to free themselves from their own oppression.” Liberatory practices challenge traditional forms of teaching and learning. The process is more of a collective endeavor between teachers and students. Knowledge is overtly linked to one’s daily reality. Liberatory learning facilitates awareness of the reality of oppression and also promotes action and reflection. It is life-affirming, compassionate, grace-giving, and enables learners to tap into their own brilliance. It prioritizes collective care. Garcia noted the following outcomes as viable ways of promoting liberation: civic engagement, academic self-concept, social agency, social justice orientation, racial/ethnic identity development, leadership development, critical consciousness, and graduate school aspirations. https://lnkd.in/gxU7Pepn National University #HSI #NuFam

For the first time in Australia’s history faith leaders, academics, and peak bodies from the sector will come together and articulate a vision for the role of faith-based higher education in the region. A booming faith-based secondary education sector, now teaching around 50% of all secondary students in some major cities, has dramatically increased demand for diverse tertiary pathways with a faith ethos. However, sector representatives highlight the ongoing challenges around student funding inequality, access to research grants, and religious freedom that need to be addressed...
