India Cooling Coalition (ICC)’s Post

The session on ‘Doubling Energy Efficiency for Cooling Appliances in India’ aimed to delve into how the current pathway for cooling appliances will need to evolve for India to achieve the goal of doubling energy efficiency. It examined the current trajectory of energy efficiency policies for cooling appliances, explored key strategies to enhance energy efficiency, and identified opportunities for collaboration and innovation in the field. The esteemed panelists included Aditya Chunekar, Fellow, Prayas (Energy Group), Pune; Abhishek Gupta, Head of International, Strategy, Appliances, Rooftop Solar and PE & A, Energy Efficiency Services Limited; Prashant Saxena, Business Unit Head, CG Power and Industrial Solutions Limited, Sakshi Nathani, Program Manager - Industry, Buildings & Cooling, Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation. The context was set by Bishal Thapa, Senior Director, CLASP. The session was moderated by Neha Dhingra, Senior Manager, India Program, CLASP. There was an emphasis on the significance of doubling sectoral targets for appliances and enforcing higher standards. Additionally, careful pricing analysis and quantitative impact assessments were stressed. The importance of implementing efficient bulk procurement programs, along with rigorous compliance measures and transparent governance, was underscored for ensuring continuous progress in energy efficiency initiatives. It was highlighted that the 10 million target for the fans' program by EESL is merely the beginning. It was suggested that while fans are the current focus, a similar approach should be extended to other appliances. One of the key points underscored that 70% of fan sales are replacements, with all fans currently being star-rated, mostly at a 1-star level.  An observation highlighted a robust Indian supply chain for electronics and magnets, signaling readiness for BLDC adoption. Prioritising repairs and engaging with end-users over outright replacements for BLDC technology was recommended. It was emphasised that demand aggregation and bulk procurement strategies are crucial. The suggestion was made to incentivise consumers with tax benefits similar to the vehicle scrappage policy to spur demand for appliances.
