Recently, had the privilege to participate in a stimulating discussion at the SAMRIDHI Conclave 2023 by iHub - AWaDH @ IIT Ropar on 'Driving Innovations in Deep Tech through investments,' featuring industry veterans Vinod Keni, Mayuresh, & Anil Joshi, along with Sivesh Kumar & Swarandeep, moderated by Ankit. It was a truly insightful conversation on the often-overlooked deep tech sector amidst the e-commerce, edutech, health tech, fintech, and D2C hype. (a distribution model, not a sector 😁). While I appreciate the stimulating conversation and the commitment of these pioneers, I want to delve a bit deeper into the topic. I kicked off the panel discussion with blunt honesty, highlighting the prevailing issue in India's startup landscape: an obsession with valuations, unicorns, and a recent 'funding winter.' Startups are facing challenges due to their dependency on excessive capital burn, which is unsustainable...always has been! It's undeniable that India has seen remarkable success stories with companies like Ola, Flipkart, Zomato, and Swiggy. Still, it's crucial to acknowledge that many of these models have been adapted from Silicon Valley aggregator models with no innovation at the core. In reality, there has been no dearth of deeptech 'projects' or innovations - just that they haven't been given enough resources or time to scale to be able to solve problems at large - that a developing nation like India has. Moving away from commerce, deep tech solves problems at large for societal needs and commercial gains are a by-product that people seem to miss. From day 1 the focus has been on the exit/return potential and thus the hurry to rush into things & then abandon them. To nurture deep tech innovation in India, we must encourage patient capital for startups. Deep tech ventures, distinct from consumer-oriented ones, often demand extended development periods. Recognizing their vast potential, we should ensure they receive the essential resources to prosper. Secondly, nurturing a culture of R&D is essential. Collaborations between academia and industry can play a significant role in this regard. Supporting research initiatives, providing access to cutting-edge technologies, and encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration can fuel deep tech innovation. Lastly, creating a regulatory framework that is supportive of deep tech innovation is crucial. Policies that enable startups to protect their intellectual property, navigate complex regulatory landscapes & and access government grants can go a long way in facilitating growth in this sector. India's startup success is undeniable, yet the potential for true deep-tech innovation remains untapped. With industry veterans, visionary investors, and collaborative efforts, we can lead India into a future defined by deep tech breakthroughs.
