🗣 “It is those people at the forest frontier holding an axe that have the biggest influence over what happens.”    The “true” value of forests is a collection of varying perceptions and knowledge, but one thing is clear; targeted policy and advocacy is critical. An empowered population is influential in developing and actioning proper forest management frameworks to achieve economic, environmental and socio-cultural benefits for local communities.    At the Wyss Academy Dialogue on the True Value of Forests held in Maroantsetra, Madagascar, responsible exploitation and sustainable preservation of forests is the balance hoped for. Heartening news… One of the main reasons many of the previous decade’s biodiversity Targets were not reached was insufficient resources to match the need - the ‘funding gap’. Integrating biodiversity into finance; considering the impact of biodiversity in investments is critical to closing the funding gap. ‘The funding gap for safeguarding 30 per cent of our terrestrial and marine areas has been estimated to be between $103 billion and $178 billion annually (around 0.3% of global GDP). Various sources estimate the funding gap for the broader range of actions under the Convention of Biological Diversity has been estimated to be between US$599 billion and $824 billion annually (around 0.7% of global GDP).’ (BIOFIN, 2022)

We’re investing £3 million funding for a new research network that will integrate biodiversity and finance. Phase 1 of the ‘Integrating Biodiversity into Finance: Building a Nature-Positive Future’ programme began last January, with 12 projects launching to explore the gaps and improve integration between the financial system and biodiversity. The longer-term aim has been to work with a multi-stakeholder community to build the knowledge, tools, collaboration, and capacity to develop the solutions needed using a holistic approach. With this funding, we can launch this network and build on the emerging outcomes of Phase 1. This programme consists of three flagship initiatives, supported by the network and strategic coordination hub. They are: 🔹Financing Green Sector Transitions - tackles the need to restore nature in the UK's agriculture sector, which accounts for over 70% of landcover. 🔹Greening Finance for Nature - addresses the decision-making processes of financial institutions such as banks and asset management companies and how they impact nature. 🔹Financing Biodiversity - responds to the challenge of financing biodiversity conservation. Looking back at this year's International Day of Forest themed "Forests and Innovation",I was particularly drawn to one of the speakers remarks ,"We need to stop writing the Earth's Orbituary." I couldn't say it any better: despite the challenges we face as humanity,we have achieved major milestones and advances in all aspects of our lives.Innovative solutions continue to improve livelihoods, heighten education outcomes,foster econonomic and industrial growth, improve health and encourage environmental sustainability and management. I have taken the liberty of copying a couple of phrases from my admired Pascal Finette, extracted from his last TheHeretic.org newsletter: “As an entrepreneur or business #leader, crafting the right #story can make all the #difference in winning over customers, investors, and the public. I have experienced how true those statements are in the process of sharing #ProjectSterna with the potentially interested parties and have seen their very #positive reaction. It’s #ValueProposition (Wing for Wing. Regenerative Flying) is short, simple and easy to understand once you know its purpose. Through interdisciplinary collaboration among experts in #biodiversity conservation, #business, and public engagement, #ProjectSterna is a proactive approach to #sustainability, enhancing #societal #commitment in alignment with the Global Biodiversity Framework and the #SDG of the 2030 Agenda, creating a novel business-client #communication channel. The conservation finance space is moving fast internationally. 66% of investors surveyed in 2023 said that biodiversity will be a significant or central factor in their investment policy over the next two years. 48% said it was already the case today.
