Nature-based solutions offer immense potential to tackle climate change at scale, necessitating a 'carbon-first' approach where governments can take the lead in mobilising finance towards nature. At Day 2 of #Ecosperity Week, Bill Townsend, Co-Founder & Chief Strategy Officer, Anew highlighted the need to prioritise capability building resources for asset owners and investors, along with establishing frameworks for accountability and transparency, which will build upon the progress that has been achieved. Though more work needs to be done to progress climate-impact financing, the outlook seems hopeful. Positive sentiments resonated throughout the panel discussion featuring Jamie Houston, CEO, Aurora Sustainable Lands; and Robin Rix, Chief Legal, Policy and Markets Officer, Verra; moderated by Ling Min Hoon, Investment Director, GenZero, on the pivotal role nature-based solutions and carbon markets can play in accelerating a just and green transition.

Investing in nature represents a key mechanism through which organizations can combine financial and sustainability imperatives. By directing capital towards projects that mitigate climate change, enhance biodiversity, promote socio-economic well-being, and recognize local communities' knowledge and integral role, organizations can help catalyze a shift towards a more sustainable world. However, how organizations invest in the right projects and ensure integration with their wider climate strategies is not straightforward. That’s why I’m delighted to share the launch of the ‘Natural Climate Solutions for the Voluntary Carbon Market’ today as part of our #LCAW2024 program. A collective effort of our ERM Sustainability Institute, WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Natural Climate Solutions Alliance, and the Forest Investor Club, this important guide, designed for companies and financial institutions, illustrates not only the potential of NCS but also the critical role that private sector investment plays in unlocking this potential. NCS projects are complex and require highly technical due diligence. However, if well-designed and managed, NCS can be a valuable addition to a natural capital investment strategy. By exploring the nuances of the voluntary carbon market and explaining the investment considerations, this guide offers a roadmap for investors to navigate this complex landscape. Congratulations to all those who have contributed to this guide, including Alexander Cox, who talks about the importance of investing in NCS below. #CarbonMarkets #VoluntaryCarbonMarket #LondonClimateActionWeek

IWRM, Water-Food-Energy, Urban water-sanitation-drainage systems. Water connects the interrelated dimensions of development. It is a major driver of change, enabler and supporter of any human endeavour.
Yes, Natural Climate Solutions, at least those at the scale we need, are complex and require high-quality projects, financial structuring, serious and in deep market/business opportunities analysis and structuring, and independant, international, third party suppervision. All of this -risk reduction measures- have a cost. The problem is that nobody wants to bear that cost. Project owners do not have the resources -they are already looking for resources-, and investors are reluctant to consider this pre-investment stage as part of the business opportunity. So, everybody is asking for high quality but nobody wants to pay for it. We need to redefine the boundaries where value can come from.
